Check Engine light came on my '99 and the code reads P0336-"Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit/Range Performance"

I disconnected my EZ and reconnected all connections and the light went out and stayed out. The code of course is still stored. Truck runs fine and is stock otherwise. What does this mean and do I have a problem? What does the EZ have to do with Crank sensor? Should I just clear the code and see if it returns or is it a ticking time bomb waiting to leave me stranded? :{ PLEASE help with any advice.

yeah, you'll need to remove the starter to replace it. I replaced one for a buddy about 2 months ago in his Y2K with 124K miles. You'll need to use a slight twisting motion to get the old sensor out of the block. Just be easy on it. Cummins P/N 4002066 for $37

here's a good TDR thread

Got the same check engine code today, took it to dealer and they told me CPS but could not duplicate fault. First check enginge light in 4. 5 years so I got a new sensor. The starter took 10 minutes but, no slight twist to remove the old sensor! I have a Y2K with 138K miles and I spent 3. 5 hours removing it from the block. It was IMPOSSIBLE to turn it without destroying whatever part you were holding. It broke off numerous times as I tried cresent wrenches, vice grips, screwdrivers and a chisel. I ended up drilling a small hole in the remaining extension that was now 1/2 inch recessed into the block and ran a 2" screw into it and then pryied with various items and finally got it out. Then the new one would not go in. Found a ridge of corrosion just at the entrance that caused all of the problems. Took a dremel and polished off the ridge and THEN it was the slight twist trick! Dealer told me might have been responsible for my occasional miss also. We will see. Just thought I would add this if anyone was going to try this "quick" proceedure any time soon.

Boy was that ever fun...

... NOT!

What a royal PITA!
Mines a 99 with 69K miles. Code was also P0336 and the tach kinda worked off and on. Big power loss when tach was not working (i. e. no signal from CKP). Just like raf2000, my starter came off easy but the big problem was the CKP sensor. The old sensor would NOT move no matter what I tried. I used every tool I could think of and it would not budge. Ended up drilling holes into it with a dremel till there was not much left of the sensor that was visible. It turned now, but would not come out. Drilled more and ended up twisting and pulling with a big right angle wire cutter. Bigest piece left when I got it out was maybe 1/2" to 3/4" in size. At that point I was really happy cause I had gotten the darn thing out and was on the finish side of the job. But, the new sensor would NOT go into the block, not even 1/8 of an inch. Used a dremel tool to remove any ridge of corrosion. Still no go. Ended up removing the o-ring on the new sensor and filing/sanding the diameter of the new sensor just a bit till it would fit. Reinstalled o-ring and used permatex ultra copper silicone sealant to seal the thing into the block.

My dealer had quoted me $190 to do this job. I now wish I had let them do it for that price.

I still do not understand the reasoning of the DC tech wizard that determined that this sensor was not part of the engine and not covered by the engine warranty! What a bunch of BS! It is mounted on the engine, connects to the engine computer, effects engine performance (and probably emissions), is made by Cummins, is probably supplied by Cummins with the engine assembly, for cripes sake it mounts in a hole THROUGH THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK, but this is "not a part of the engine" and not covered under that warranty. GRRRRRR!!! ... End rant.

Others have had this fix be a "quick" one and I do believe them. My experience certainly was not quick!
