Microsoft makes it clear when you transition from one version of Windows to the next using number designations; used to be because they made you pay more money. On the other hand, Apple switches from one version of OSX to the next with new goofy names, but they don't charge you extra money. Anyway,...who gets to Officially designate a change as a "new" generation for Ram trucks? How does that happen? I believe I have seen other Ram forums where their generation numbering does not match the numbering that I see here on TDR.

Just something I have always wondered about...

Ram has labeled the 2025 truck with the same model designation as a 2010 truck, D2 for 3500’s. When a true 5th gen comes out Ram will change that model designation.

I see, makes sense. Thanks.

This is the designation that I see in the header on the pages of my Service Manual, which for my 2004 reads "DR," right?

Are these model designations readily available? Where else does Ram publish them? Surely you're not waiting for a Service Manual come out to see if it has changed...

Going by memory here. But yes DR is Gen 3 1500, maybe 2500?
D1/3500 Gen 3. D2/Gen 4 3500. C&C has a different designation.
