I have a 01 2500 eth truck that has an edge comp and a fass system (solid 19psi). Over the past few weeks I keep getting a check engine light. When I read the codes the only one that comes back is the companion code P1693, nothing else. I have noticed that when the code is set the engine has a slight hunt, other than that the truck has been running fine. I'd appreciate any ideas you guys might have.

Thanks,

Chris

From Toolman's list at : https://www.turbodieselregister.com...ine-transmission-faq/96634-24v-code-list.html

"P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine

control module.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC

Detected in ECM

A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM. "

All that code means is that there is a problem in the ECU. The ECU (Engine Control Unit) is a Cummins part, that is mounted on the Driver's side of the engine, that runs the engine. It interfaces with the truck's PCM (Powertrain Control Module and the VP44's PCM (Pump Control Module). The PCM doesn't always talk to the ECU very well, and you maay need more than the 3 key twist method to get the codes out. Do you have any Bud's who have a Smarty or you can go to some autoparts stores to get your codes read.

I am thinking that you may want to disconnect your Comp, and try it again. Good luck, Moose

I get 1693 and 0602 together all the time not from my TST but my smarty throws it. I can clear it I never get the check engine light. I would think this engine light isnt connected to the 1693. get your truck scanned would be next step or borrow smarty if you know anyone. maybe someone else will chime in on this.

Thanks for the help guys!

Well I checked the codes again and I got a P1689.

"P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM

and Injection Pump Module

Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection"

so now what, do you think that this problem could be caused by the scotchlock (supplied in the comp's installation kit) finally wearing through the pump wire and causing an intermitant open?

thanks in advance,

Chris

Chris:

Remove the tapped wire at IP, for inspection your prognosis could be correct. Also disconnect the map sensor etc. and go back to stock. If prob goes away its the "box" or the "box" harness or connection points at IP.

Map, IAT and OR APPS can also cause these symptoms.

If you are comfortable doing elec. tests ck. for 12v @ pin 7 (Red w light green tracer) at IP connector harness and a for good grnd. ( 0. 0 to 0. 3 volts)at Pin 6 (black wire w/tan tracer). ECM (VIA PIN 36) provides 12v via the relay (pin 86) in the PDC which allows relay to close and complete the circuit.

Pin 30 of the relay goes to B+, Pin "87" of the relay goes to the IP connector Pin 7.

If you can't replicate the surging with it idling take it for a ride with added DMM/Voltage meter leads, if you back track to the ECM for providing intermittant voltage to the relay, this may be cause for ECM replacement.

The cheapest ones are found at ECM rebuilders (1200 from Cummins and 680 from Dodge). If you get stuck I can get you one. . send me a PM

The Dodge DRBIII scan tool can "do some bidirection testing to further confirm" a suspect ECM.

I haven't changed any ECM's (98-02) in a long time, but maybe due to heat and time the drivers seem to be failing internally, the last couple of mos.

It might be necessary to remove the IP and re-solder the wire w/heat shrink etc.

See P 8W 80 40 & P 8W 80 42 in your FSM (factory service manual)

well, thanks again for the help.

I think I've narrowed it down to the box. I disconnected the box and drove around without any problems. I decided to hook it back up to see if the problem came back. I drove it around and I didn't get any codes but the box wasn't acting right, there was no noticable power increase with the box on any setting. I think this pretty well confirms that something is going on with the comp. I'll be calling edge tomorrow. If anyone has any other ideas I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Chris

Codes

I kept getting the codes (1689 and 1693)for years before and after replacing the VP-44 and ECM, that was expensive! They couldn't tell me what the other code was or were the different places that I went to.
