Just completed a 4400 mile round trip... Some Issues!

A brief history: This 08 3500 was purchased new in Dec 2007 :) and has 9800 miles on the odometer. Including the original oil, I have been notified by the message center "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED/CONTACT DEALER" at 2592, 4195 and 9750 miles. Each of these notices were handled by changing the oil and filter at the dealer. My driving style includes some heavy towing, some freeway driving, and daily commuting. Yesterday (at 9750 miles) when I started the truck I got a malfunction indicator light (MIL). I took it to the dealer who noted on the warranty repair ticket the following. "Failed part was soot accumulation code P2262 No Turbo Boost Detected. Found code P2262. As per TSB 11-001-08 installed cleaning port and performed Turbo Cleaning. Cleaned GR system and updated PCM to current software release. Cleaned both O2 sensors with compressed air and road tested to verify repair. " I was able to speak to the tech who actually worked on the truck. His basic recommendation (and I'm paraphrasing, a little) "Stop treating this truck like it was a baby. Drive it like you stole it. Work the hell out of this truck. It will do better under those circumstances and you won't have these frequent oil changes and MIL's. " I thought I would pass this on for the good of the order.
 
that's the dealers thought but..... that don't work but so long our truck has been to the dealer twice now and had to be cleaned, they sure have a big problem with these engines. you shouldn't have to dog your truck to keep it running.
 
My 08 5500 has close to 33K miles, maybe more... We've not seen the change engine oil message at all... we started changing it a 5000 Miles, have now moved that to 7500 and if we don't see the light we're going to extend it to 10,000. We assume it has the same ability as our 10L CAT to run much higher mileage between changes...

We've never seen a regen or had a problem with soot... we run it over 15k Lbs all the time with a good percentage of the time at 18K to its limit of 19500...

On a hot summer day this truck might start at 7:30 am and never shut off until 5:30-6:00... . if the driver stops for lunch in a hot area it runs for the AC... in the winter when its 20*F it runs for the heater... .

We ran our F550 the same way... had lots of injector and engine wiring harness problems... but ran it for over 500K miles... we expect more from the 5500... .

The biggest difference is that the 5500 is 2007 compliant and the 3500 pick ups are 2010 compliant and DC is using us as there Beta testers at 50K a pop. I personaly have had no problems at all with 6K on the clock but I am expecting them soon enough. Hopefully I am wrong.

My 08 5500 does have EGR and DPF... maybe its set up different with software, but the hardware is there... .

I understand you have EGR and DPF. The difference is the way those parts work. Like I said, the C&C's are 07 compliant and the pick ups are compliant with 2010 standards and it appears that there was not enough time to do enough real world testing on the 2010 configuration so they are using us to do it for them. We have the same types of parts between the C&C's and pick ups but they work a lot different.
 
If you look at the Cummins data (from Cummins, not the D/C idiots), you'll see that Cummins has rated the oil change interval of these engines as 12,000miles. It is Dodge who has the 7500mile interval, I suspect thanks to this ridiculous emissions garbage. After 7000miles the oil in my truck is measuring a 30wt viscosity:eek:

This is what killed Ford. In '04 they wanted the 6. 0L to be 2007 emissions compliant, AND the 7. 3L couldn't pass 2004 emissions standards. In their frenzied haste to beat D/C at the power game, Ford commissioned Navistar to take the International Harvester VT265 engine and push it to its limits. We've seen the results...



I will never understand why these companies are so damned eager to comply with the EPA's standards years before they have to.



Was the CTD 5. 9L so old in Mopar's eyes that they needed a new engine? Did they think it had reached its power limits?
 
Its not hard to undestand why Dodge went to 2010 regs. in 2008. Extra $995. 00 to purchase, and two years of using buyers like me to test it for them. (Kinda reminds me of GM in the 70s) My current thinking is that this will be my last Dodge product. I'll get bit but I will get rid of this POJ when it is close to me having to pay for the unkeep it requires. Also with the fuel in oil problem how long will the bearings etc. last. Going in again this next week for a turbo problem and to see if they can fix the stumble on rolloff (3rd time for this problem).
 
And that's exactly why I'm looking at going back to the '03-'05... I can deal with having a cat on the '05, but screw having an EGR, DPF and all the headaches associated with them.
