I am working on a 1998 12 valve with a major oil leak between the gov. housing? and the main case. It is the rear most housing type cover on the back of the Inj. pump, I think it has the governor and throttle inside. I have it loose but it still seems to be attached to the throttle shaft?? I don't see where or how to disconnect it so the case will slide off. It moves about 1 inch or so back as the throttle shaft rotates but stops when the shaft stops rotating.



Am I already in to deep for a non bosch repair person or is this doable for a normal mechanic?? The pump is still on the engine so it is hard to really see what is going on inside the housing. Any help would be most welcome, even if it is to say, I should have stayed the heck out of it... :-laf

I think it is time to pull the pump, take it to a good pump shop and let the experts repair it. I did this just today, not on a cummins though.
 
Some of the governor linkage is attached to the cast aluminum housing, and putting the unit back together is tricky and not for the average mechanic by any means. There is a fiber gasket between the governor housing and the main pump body, as well as seals around the shafts that come out of the housing. I recommend going to a good Bosch shop.
 
Thanks for the advice, I am going to take it:) I couldn't figure out the governor linkage inside the housing, plus I am not sure I can even buy bosch parts.



I did go ahead and re-aline the existing gasket, (it had moved because the rear bolt that holds the shut down solenoid bracket to the back of the pump was falling out loose) and glued it in place, then a thin layer of rtv on the gasket and bolted it back together, so far no leaks. It also had a broken bolt on the AFC housing that caused a slight seep so I fixed that. When it goes south again I will just send it off.



One other thing I noticed, you 12 valve guys probably already know this but that housing was half full of oil when I split it and made a big ole mess. I assumed it would all drain back to the crank case but I guess not. I would think that pint of oil would contaminate a new oil change...

1- The oil you found is normal and why the oil goes dark so quickly after an oil change .

2- I had a minor oil leak on my pump from one of the bolts backing out. I only found it when I had the shock pulled out and could see one missing. I was prepared to send it to my pump rebuilder.
