Hey you Pump tuners... ... .

I have a 4KGSK in my pump and a #5 Plate 215 Injectors and now all of a sudden, no Idle. I ran through the gears on a back road yesterday and held it in 2nd for a while (3500 rpm) then on th 3rd, etc. All seemed fine until I got to the next stop sign. Viola, no idle. I can keep it running with my foot, but not by itself. Whats Up?????

I rechecked the gov springs for a broken one or mis adjustment. That is all OK. I set the idle up and now it will idle at about 1k if I put my foot on the throttle to start it. When I put it in gear I have to keep it running with my foot or it dies.

The engine sounds fine and runs fine off idle. I suspect that there is an internal setting (?) that gives the fuel to the engine when you load it with the transmission. That must have stopped working.

Any suggestions that you guys know of?

Thanks, LaserBob

Bob,

You should get hold of Piers about this. The governor is involved with starting. It probably is involved with idle too. Piers would know for sure.

Bob, Im confident that when you were buttoning up the GSK job using Piers' instructions, you fell into the same misunderstanding that I did  . You most likely forgot to reinstall the shims that go under the largest springs. I did and had to crank the daylights out of my idle adjustment screw to get the thing to run without my foot on the pedal! Go back and look in your baggie of leftovers and see if the shims are in there...

Bingo, I think we have a winner. Piers is on the road right now, but when I did mine he told me to leave the big spring alone... . this is the idle spring! So you should have a retainer as said above for the idle spring, then the retainer that he provides and the Gov springs 3 per position for the 4K's! I just update mine from 3-4K's as we as the valve springs!

Jim

It's almost certainly the adjustment on the governor springs. Be sure there is a steel plate under all the springs. There may or may not be shims under the outer (idle) spring. Be sure that both sides are adjusted the same, usually about 0. 070" from stud to spring retainer (not the screw-on lock).

A number of folks have had problems getting the adjustment right on the governor spring kit. It is not for everyone, and not always easy to get driveability and performance matched up as you want them.

Yep Joe is right again, I toyed with mine today after last night to get it like I wanted it, BOTW Joe, thanks for the magazine tip as I forget about them sometimes, the install went great except for the first slow and careful #1 cylinder..... remember those days:D

Jim

Guys,

I think that I need to clarify this. The GSK has been in the pump for several months. I did the speed run at about 9AM the other day and the idle went away. I then removed all the springs to recheck the settings and look for a broken one. There were no obvious errors in the parts. The idle changed without any bolts being removed from the pump.

I tried to call Piers, no luck, Muncie I guess (I know). I tried Al Piers right hand man, could not get through to him. I called Lawrence, no suggestions other than what I have tried.

I have a guy here locally who seems to think there is an idle spring kit he can get and we can put that in. Not in the normal gov springs, but another small spring in the back of the pump. I may know tomorrow. Will update you all if I get something to work.

The truck is drivable, just have to feather the throttle at the stop signs and play with it when you drop it in gear.

Thanks for the Suggestions.

The factory setting on my governor spring had one side a &frac14 turn tighter than the other side. I used the same setting when swapping the springs. I must be lucky. My idle is the same and my throttle response is nearly the same before and after.

On Bob's problem, I wonder if something else failed such as the governor lever adjustments. Maybe a problem with the fuel solenoid shutoff?
