changing comp. for new tire size?

What ever happened to the idea of putting the mighty P pump on the 24v? Then you would never have to worry about the injection pump going out. Is anyone out there still trying to get a package together for the gauge problem?

First off, nobody said P7100's lasts forever... why do so may vendors sell reman units? The ECM requires feed back from the electronics in the VP44 to keep the engine running and completely different throttle position sensor. That would be the first thing to figure out, along with custom fabricating new fuel lines... doesn't seem like a cheap or easy project. I bet you could buy five VP44's for the same price as a project like this. JMHO.

That is right- they are only good for a million miles or so!

well, i could be wrong but i think the hardest part is the mounting of P-7100 on the engine and if a set up that can be configured to mount it on the engine then the rest will be rather easy. no they dont last for ever but that type pump rather wears out then just give up without notice, and they will let you know ahead of the time that they are on they way out,not like last night it was just fine but now it does not start.
if some sort of an adaper can be designed that will make it fit on the engine i think it will run very well.

The P7100 also has it's negatives.
1. It takes a lot more HP to drive it.
2. Subject to more engige oil leaks, frequent leaks at throttle shaft seals.
3. More fuel leaks.
4. Frequent govenor problems.
5. Very costly to repair and service.
6. Large, heavy, and restricts access to the left side of the engine.
7. Would be less emmissions friendly on the ISB. and the liberal tree huggers would have you in jail.
I will stick with my new hi-teck VP 44.

A million miles!? Maybe someone should tell the owners of the last 5 trucks I've seen get 7100s replaced at my local dealer.
I've got one of each (12v & 24v) and so far no problem with either.

Mike Wood at "Scheid Diesel" in Effingham,
Illinois has a 1996 Dodge with a 24 Valve
Engine with a P7100 pump on it. I have
driven the truck and it runs very well!
If you are interested in doing this I am
sure either him or Dan Scheid will help
you with all the "technical aspects" of
the change. You can reach Mike @

at the Terre Haute shop. Their number is

Good luck!

I have seen a P-pump on a 24valve farther east than Schieds, but it is a secret.

I believe it will become more common very soon, sort of like the twin craze.

I would like to see numbers on failures of 7100's vs. the 44's.

The 7100 has an awesome reliablity record.

For what I will get out of my engine, I woud probably go through five of the vp44. I am planning on adding the p7100 and twin turbos- equaling 600hp. I woud like to know what others hae on their 24v to come close to that please.

You mean I'm going to have pump problems when I get a few miles on the truck? #ad

Oh. I didn't realize that was all it took #ad

I guess I did it the hard way #ad

What's the easy way to 700 hp? My poor old Ram is feeling pretty sickly again #ad

schied did it the easy way , they took a NON 24V truck and swapped in the 24V , no electronics to deal with and putting the timing housing from the 12V onto the 24V solves the problem of mounting it .

i thought of doing it myself last year but have changed my mind when all the 12V's i see that are turned way up in HP are belching smoke pigs when doing anything but idling or crawling along , put your foot in it and watch out . i do think that the valet switch takes care of some of that , the thing i like most about the VP44 is the extra HP is the flick of the switch away , i still am concerned with fuel mileage , turned up to 600 hp is not fuel mileage friendly for me #ad

well I'm stradling the fence trying to decide if I will keep this truck, or pawn it off on the wife, for a new "old" 12valve. #ad
the VP44 is the only hangup I see with the truck I purchased, and it was bought to play with. #ad

I am currently looking into a private stash of VP44's to keep it running.

until someone can fix the design of them that is #ad

Hey - - Did any of you see/try the new "Blue Box" that Chip is coming out with. Its called the Wizzard. When I was up there last week talking with Chip about the Killer Dowel Jig,he showed/demonstrated it to me.
Man that is one real awsome unit. Its got me seriously considering changing my 12V to a 24V just so I can run it. I brought home a beta version of it to put on a friends 2001. 5 next week.

I think the real answer to the VP44 reliability is fuel flow. With so many lift pump failures, and most of us running around with fuel supply and return lines that are too small, the VP44 overheats internally and fails. The most reasonable precaution is to install a fuel pressure sender after the fuel filter and keep an eye on the go-juice pressure.

what makes you say this ? have you seen any of the data from testing using a FLOW METER i posted ?

the factory lines are good for 400 plus REAR WHEEL HP ( sportbike has put 550hp to the ground with the stock lines and pickup ), most guys are content with less HP than that .

the only time you need the huge lines is when you are using more fuel than the VP44 can supply and the only way to do that is with some real HUGE injectors ( like DD super mentals) , much larger than DD3's or have modified the internals of the VP44 .

the VP44 is well capable of making some big numbers , its just takes a bit more , there has been alot more R+D time for the P7100 pump than there has been for the VP44 .
