Hey guys, I've had a BD pump sitting in the garage waiting to go on my 94 but haven't had time to get it swapped. My original pump grenaded today and I need to get this thing done asap! My old pump and gear don't have a keyway but my new pump does... It's easy enough to find TDC on the motor with the dowel pin on the timing cover but how do I know where the pump is sitting? What do I measure or check to ensure the pump timing is close? I will be taking it to a shop after to get the timing fine tuned but I need to close to get it running.

Any other helpful hints/tips regarding the swap would be great :)

Thanks in advance!

Doesn't matter about the keyway. Our trucks don't use it. To determine the timing you need the engine at TDC, like you said. To do the pump, though, you need a timing kit. You mount a dial indicator on the #1 DV holder using the adapter in the kit, find the base circle of the cam lobe, zero the dial indicator and then roll the cam over until you get a specific amount of lift in millimeters, which is listed on a chart on Piers' web site. Depends on what pump you have and what timing you want. Seems like there's a detailed step by step description out here somewhere if you search a bit.

There is a plug on the driver side of the pump that should have a sleeve installed under it that holds the pump at TDC. When you snug the gear nut (18 ft-lbs?), you flip the sleeve around and it will clear the "pin" in the pump (you can do this when you're done). Then torque the gear to the full value and use the pump chart to check the timing.

Clean the gear bore and the pump shaft with brake cleaner prior to install. Also make sure the pump has enough oil in it.
