I was just over in the classifieds and saw an add for a pac brake for use with 30lb spring. This is the first I have ever heard of a exhaust brake
that didn't need the 60 lb springs. Does anyone have any info on this? Is anyone running one? I would think that it would have the braking of the
other types. Any info would be helpful

Drawson, I had one on my 96 12-valve. It worked pretty good. The one I have now, works better, when it works. I believe, if I remember right, if you go on & replace your exhaust springs with the 60#, you can order a plug from Pac-Brake to give it more braking power.

PacBrake has a brake that works with the original 30lb springs, by leaving a by-pass plug out of the butterfly. I tried that, and was really unhappy with the lack of braking power. I went back and had the 60lb springs put in, and it really made a difference on the exhaust braking hold-back.

From my experience, I wouldn't recommend even trying the e-brake without the 60lb springs. A good diesel shop installed my springs for about $180, including taking the exhaust apart and installing the missing plug.

Good luck, Paul Shafer

I just sold the one I had on my '96. I was happy with the brake with 30# springs. Only the biggest grades required much service brake usage. The brake works its best at higher rpms so downshifting makes it work better. With the pac brake on my '01 I am upshifting when empty because it has too much braking.
