Just wondering where any of you using the painless wiring harness for Genos have mounted it? How did you handle the empty pigtails? Seems like for a really neat installation it needs a terminal block.

I mounted mine just to the right of the steering column. Removed the knee panel below the column and mounted it to the metal cross brace. I only have 2 wires left. All the others are being used. Im thinking about what gadget to get to use up the other wires. Thw wires are looped and wire tied out of the way for now.

Mines mounted just to the left (instead of right - either will work) of the steering column behind the knee bolster as well. If you go to this message - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/000507.html - it's actually about the shutdown module I installed but you can see the painless circuit box on the left and the unused wires coiled below. What I did was put a piece of electrical tape over each unused wire (just folded in two - not circular) and then wrapped them in a circle and around themselves (like a VERY loose know) and set them in the metal brace at the bottom (it's u-shaped - perfect). A fellow GLTDR member - Norm Wires did the install for me at our very first meeting in March, he's a painless wiring dealer. All I had to do was decide what to do with the unused wires.

Steve: I'm not familiar with thie "painless wiring harness". What is it used for? Is it just another "nice to have" ?

I have two of them, the weatherproof kind, under the hood. When I switched to Optima batteries, I modified the left battery tray and turned the battery 90 degrees. I then had room to mount the 2 PW units. These units are the only way to go. I still have some circuits that are unused, so whenever I add something, I have a fused source all ready to go. No more in-line fuses and spaghetti under the dash!

Ever the one to look for alternatives, I found two other sources of similiar products:

First was very nice high current (i. e. big cables like jumper cables with mondo battery clamps) distribution panel designed for hi-end car stereo installations. Source: several consumer electronics superstores. I imagine the crookshank(sp?) catalog will have them also.

Second was waterproof (ok, resistant) distribution panels of various size, shapes and capabilities designed for boats. Source: several marine supply stores.
====================================
If adapting these kinds of products to your truck, always insure proper fuse protection!!

I mounted my waterproof Painless Wiring Cirkit Boss (purchased from Geno's Garage) under the drivers seat (on the outboard side... attached to the side of the steel seat frame). Only two stainless steel socket head cap screw heads are visible of the four used to mount the unit. The wires were extended and routed through the slot in the carpet that was provided for the power seat track wiring. Each of the excess wires are coiled and wire tied, stored/covered by the top edge of the carpeting below the steering column. Easy access when an additional circuit is needed, but out of sight until then. In addition, the cut end of each wire end is folded back 1/4" onto itself with two different colors of heat shrink tubing applied... one color to denote constant on circuits, the other to denote switched on circuits. This allows ease of circuit identification (by type) at a glance. The results are a very clean installation with ease of servicing fuses due to mounting location.
