Does anyone have a problem with paint. . I have a 2007 white duallie and the tailgate is starting to look like it should be a hood with many nicks that look like rock dings... wonder if the dealer will do a repaint on the tailgate... have to take the Edge system out for the third time for the reflash... last time was for the egr system, and the time before was for a new Turbo... only have 19,000 miles on it. I am getting real good up climbing in the engine compartment to take the injector harness apart... pretty soon will need a new one as the snap is really wearing out #@$%!

If your dealer has a body shop I'm sure they will be happy to repaint your tailgate if you are paying. It is certainly not a warranty item if that's what you mean.

I've never seen a tailgate get rock dings. Do you drive with it down?

Hi Harvey... no I don't drive with it down..... I like the post about driving backwards... . it sure is looking like that is what I am doing. . :-laf

I didn't mean all the way down but extended horizontally behind the bed. Some drivers (mistakenly) believe that dropping the tailgate will decrease wind resistance and improve fuel economy on highway runs.

nope... . it is always up... . I have never seen anything like this as I know paint pretty well being an X Mac Tool dealer and calling on body shops... just a tons of nicks down to the metal. . I will ask the dealer when it goes in for it's, I believe 3 reflash... loosing count!

Strange. I've never heard of tailgate rock chips. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation, but I sure don't know what it is.

My 07. 5, 2500 was egged about a week ago and at all three locations it was hit with a direct hit the egg sheel chipped the paint in a sort of bulleye mark. I would have thought that the egg shell would never do that kind of damage.

Here is the update on the tailgate. . Service manager looked to see if the tailgate was a repaint and agreed with me that it was not. . to verify sent me to the body shop they use. They used their digital meter to measure mil thickness and it is exactly the stock mil thickness like the rest of the truck. With that being said, the dealer issued a p. o. and the tailgate was taken off and left to be sanded to metal, primed, sealed and repainted. . Body shop owner has never seen it just on a tail gate however he said that tailgates are painted typically on a line by themselves... when I pick it up will know more after they sand down to metal to see where the failure took place... So you all know, you have 3 years or 36,000 warranty on the paint... . Save me a grand!!!!

Well, got the truck gate back and it was bad primer from the factory. . Repaint looks perfect in color and texture... Dealer really took care of me on this one... remember the time and mileage limits... My Ford f-150 Harley Davidson model had a paint problem that they would not take care of as I was not the original owner. . The whole black truck was checking like Lacquer used to do. . I sold the truck as it made me sick to see this beautiful truck paint going away...

Wow thats amazing to hear you got it taken care of.

I know a lot of guys get their tailgates peppered if they tow and travel gravel roads. See it a lot with the rodeo circuit guys around here.

If you do tow a trailer on gravel roads as Lil' Dog mentioned, you will get rock chips in the tailgate from the rocks hitting the front of the trailer and deflecting back at the trucks tail gate. Even some city roads and high ways can have enougth gravel on them to cause this over time. A good set of mud flaps that must hang down to be reasonably close to the road will help. I also have Cloud Rider mud flaps that mount on the underside of the rear bumper and are adjustable in and out with a simple pin. I keep mine out aout 3" out from the outside dually tire all the time and I only have about two chips in the tailgate. I do allot of gravel road driving with my travel trailer on my way in to the back country in the mountains to go camping.
