As I mentioned in another thread I just picked up a brand new 05 QC SB 4x4 48RE that is Silver and has the Laramie package. One thing that bothers me is..... why is the back-half of the exahust painted black, just like the frame? It starts from right behing the cat and goes all the way to the tip of the pipe. My 04 was not that way... . and I have seen several new trucks that are built this way. Not only that but there is allot of overspray on the underside of the truck. The end of the drive shafts are sprayed black..... as if they were installed before the axles were painted. It is just strange..... does anyone have any answers? IMO the bare metal pipes look much better.

i haven't seen that yet from factory, but my bd system is painted tremclad gloss black from mid pipe back, and flat high temp black the downpipe... i like it better than natural finish [and eventual rust color of aftermarket systems]... i need to paint the driveshafts though. . the rust color is too much to stand [and maybe paint the 5600 too while i am under there]

Thats the first thing i noticed when i took delivery of my 05. All the 05's i've seen are like that . Rust prevetion i guess , i've seen plenty of 03's with rusted exhaust . Seems like the 3 gen exhaust tends to oxidize much faster . My 99 still had the exhaust looking fairly new , compared to some of the 3 gens i've seen.

I have a quick question. I want to paint my drive shafts and NV5600 black. They have some surface rust like everybody else. Do they need to be removed from the truck to paint them? What kind of paint can I use, and do I have to sand or in any way prep the surface?

Thanks!

Certainly the "correct" way would be to grind away all the surface rust, prime the bare metal, and paint it.

Now, if it were me I'd leave the parts in-place, wipe them down a bit with some degreaser, and shoot them with Rustoleum. Then touch-up once or twice a year as necessary. That is a completely non-scientific answer - it's only my opinion.
