Have you painted your 6spd? With what, and what colour? I have fast coolers to install, so i thought that this would be a good time to clean it and paint it.

YUP, painted mine with black Rustoleum - and also installed FastCooler, with an added heatsink...

Here's the other side, with a transmission lube filter, and another added heatsink:

Thank's for the pics Gary. What is the wire in your first pic?

That's a temperature sensor I installed temporarily to check as best I could, overall case/lube temperature. Not as effective as a proper lube probe, but best I had available. With the setup seen, my highest observed temp registered, summer towing our 5er in mountain grades was just under 150 degrees.

Mine is painted rust color.

Mine too.

Remember, iron doesn't rust like steel does. It forms a thin layer of surface rust, which chokes off the metal beneath it, thereby preventing any further rust.

Sure does look nice painted, though.

Nice work Gary. I painted the transmission black on my 2001, kept it from turning rust color :D

Speaking of transmission temps I got the 5-speed in the '96 up to 235F towing my little 17' travel trailer in Montana, most of the time it stayed below 220 towing.

Painted everything satin black when I first brought my truck home. The underside of my truck looks better than the soda can thin painted sheetmetal.

Doesn't paint act like an insulator?

Probably no more than a coating of rust would. My transmission is a bit nicer looking than the photos indicate, and a quick pass with a rag cleans it right up - winter road conditions really make the underside of a vehicle hard to maintain the way I'd like...

Now, I need to do the same with the driveshaft. :-laf

No real need for paint, but I painted mine a very thin flat black. I painted driveshafts and all else. Rust is not my fav color.

If it needs repainting, I will do it aluminum flake this time. That way any overspray onto the aluminum housings will not be noticeable.

A thin layer, just enough to color it, should not affect the heat.

As a matter of fact, black actually radiates heat better than other colors, that's why your radiator is usually black...

Do explain the filter setup...

Oil that naturally slings off the adjacent gear cluster is diverted by a baffle into the filter cavity, then thru a small filter element, then gravity flows back into the transmission sump for the next cycle. It's a pretty common transmission add-on, and is sold by Genos Garage, among other sources.

Haven't yet had mine off to check, but other users claim LOTS of garbage caught and held by these...

Interesting... I wonder what it could catch... and if its better to have that or a fast cooler... or could you stack them?

There's all sorts of garbage in the moving lube stream - wear particles from syncros and bushings, and other junk - if you ever take of the side covers off a NV-5600 during servicing it, and look at what is laying in the bottom of the transmission, you might be shocked!

Guys - including me - get lazy, and THINK that because the drained fluid LOOKS nice and clean, that everything inside is good to go...

WRONG! ;)

LOTS of trash inside there, and while it might not be apparent when draining, it's there, just the same. And it dern certain is NOT doing the moving parts of the transmission any good! ;)

The add-on filter canister itself adds lube capacity, just as the FastCoolers do, but add the benefit of the filtration as well...

Have you ever had a look-see at the Quad 4x4 filter yet to see what things look like or what these things catch after some hard miles-----i put one of them on last year, but it still to early to open it up yet. What is a good interval to change then out----10,000-20,000 miles or longer????

Not had mine off yet - not enough miles, but other threads on this board on the subject have provided pics, and they looked NASTY! ;)

Dunno about interval, depends on conscience and usage I suppose, but will probably do mine every 2 years or 24K miles, whichever comes first, which is also my lube change interval...
