Gents,

While I was at the dealership yesterday for a couple fixes I talked to them about some frustrations with my radio, mostly CarPlay but a couple other small quirks.

The 8.4 was made by Panasonic stating for MY18, but sometime at the end of last year Panasonic pulled the plug with FCA and now they are Harmon Kardon units. This is a big part of why there haven't been any software updates/improvements for the Panasonic.

They offered to replace my Panasonic with a refurb'd Harmon Kardon unit under warranty.

Is it worth switching to the Harmon Kardon?

Does anyone have the Harmon Kardon 8.4 without NAV??

Both are reputable brands.... I'm sure the look and feel of the GUI is identical between the 2. Might as well get the the HK and stay on top of everything. Even my etch-a-sketch 12" in my 19' has CarPlay issues.... Half the time when I plug it in, it just connects and works, The other half of the time when I plug my phone in... My phone displays a message telling me to unlock it to use "accessories". I'm using an iPhone X and an Apple cable.

The biggest complaints I hear about the Panasonic units over on challengertalk.com is the NAVI......it being either waaaaaay off and/or not showing the current location. For those that do not display the current location, it seems as if the unit gets replaced.

Panasonic was a great product back in the 80th and 90th last century, but sort of diminished from the scene.
Used them myself for Car and Home entertainment...

Today

I'd take the HK unit if you get it for free.
Why would you want to stick to a unit where the support ended for it?

That's my thought as well, I just wanted to make sure there weren't more issues with the replacement.

That makes sense, on the plus side is 5hat even if there are some quirks, FCA will probably sort them out with updates for the HK unit.
That would give me peace of mind in that case.

On my 2017 Ram 5500 with 8.4Nav, seems the last update improved the IVRS understanding and the NAV seems to function better too. I dont know what mine is. because in 2019, the dealer changed my 8.4Nav out while working on getting backup camera guidelines option to work. Anyway to tell by going to system screen in the 8.4?

If I ever get more motivated, I'll run the missing conductor from camera to the BCM to make that work.

Cheers, Ron

John, I'm going to share my little story about refurbed radios....

As most of you know I work at a truck dealership and at times forget that the automotive business model is far from the heavy truck business model...for example it still blows my mind that you cannot get replacement certification labels for cars in the event of a drivers door replacement.
I order them all the time for customers that have worn the labels right off the door jambs. Many times large fleets will order them before putting the trucks up for sale where the existing one has faded....We verify a vin match and place the stickers on the truck to make sure there is no funny business.
Clean Idle Decals....same thing. Truck gets painted, door gets changed, washboy camps out on the sticker a whisker too long with the 2000 psi pressure washer, etc..
Radios, if one fails under warranty we go get a brand new matching radio and give it to the tech...

So with that being said I have a Chrysler T&C with a My Gig radio that also feeds a rear DVD screen. Just before the warranty was due to expire I asked for a replacement radio as the thing would bind up in cold weather, no screen, couldn't change the volume, shut if off or anything. Hope you left it on a good station on a -10 sunny morning...took a good two hours for it to thaw out and act right...

Did the deed and much to my surprise got a REFURBISHED My Gig. Hadn't given that possibility a thought, see above....

That was the biggest piece of electronic crap I have ever owned..screen started to fail, Sirius module went out, DVD would stick in the player and wouldn't eject it.

Finding Nemo was held hostage in it for over a year.....:D

So finally a couple years ago the screen went completely dark, the sh*t board that they didn't deal with during the refurbishment process finally blew it's guts..wife was tuning it by picking the next station, waiting for station identification, and then working her way to the station she wanted. I was going to get a cheap tuner from Crutchfield or something when I decided to give eBay a shot.
Found a takeout exact match on eBay with a 30 day money back guarantee, they wanted $100.00..offered $75.00 and they took it...freight paid.

Put that in and it works like a boss!! Better than the one that came in the van ever did. And impervious to cold as well.

So when I hear the word "Refurbished" I clench and recall the story above.....

IMHO keep what you have, Carplay binds up on the "Sync" in the company Ford I use especially after taking several calls in a row. Nature of the beast in my opinion. Unplug the cable and plug it back in. Good to go. I personally suspect the iPhone rather than the vehicle sound system.

If the rest of the functions work as they should I would let it be...

A final thought, you have a 50/50 shot on that Refurbed radio.

1) It was changed for no good reason, there was something else wrong....ie “Parts Replacer” type of repair

2) It has an issue but it is intermittent...so the Refurb sub contractor finds that it passes the 5 minutes worth of testing that he/she is allowed per unit and gets a “Good to go” red check mark..not really fixed.

That is a possibility if they have seeded the exchange program with some new units to get started..
My experience is you get NEW as long as they have them - in the beginning;
Then you get Back Order status until they get stock buildup;
Stock buildup then consists of either new or refurbished;
New going to new build and refurb going to repairs, unless FCA approves new when two or more refurbs fail to fix reported issue or injects new issues;
Look for the "Z" in the part number which indicated refurb.

Then there is VIN specific software to deal with...:rolleyes:o_O

Do you have the Alpine stereo? Do you currently have the 8.4 with nav? I personally have the 8.4 w/ nav and Alpine, never had an issue.

I also question, if you change the radio for something that the truck was not originally equipped with, would you have issues with things such as lets say, heated/vented seats, or controlling which lights come on when you press the unlock/lock button?

My biggest concern would be someone going into my truck, tearing it all down and upon reassembly, they don't click back a wire 100%, enough for it to work but over the course of 6 years of owning the truck, vibrate itself out of the connection and require complete disassembly again.. Just my 0.02 but remember I also don't trust anyone else working on my truck except myself.

I too am against refurb'd radios... not a fan, maybe in my little 17 year old commuter car but not my 2 year old truck.

As far as I know all 2018’s have Panasonic radios. I’ve not heard of Pioneer OEM radios for 18’s, NAV or not.

I don’t have NAV.
