Panic Stop Brake Pedal Issue?

Greetings all! New member here. I just purchased a 3500 Aisin, mega, 4X4 and REALLY like it. Question, Last night coming home from work a dog ran out in front of me and I hit the brakes hard and fast. The brake pedal seemed to "give way" and go down much farther than usual. Made kind of a ratcheting/scraping sound as it went down. The truck stopped, but was not a comfortable feeling. I got going again, tried the brakes normally, all good. Decided to try another "panic stop" same thing happened. Is this normal? Is there some kind of pressure release on the anti lock system that would cause this when the brake pedal gets applied hard? Thanks for any input on this!

It is normal,the ABS controller takes over,leave your foot on the pedal and it will determine the best application to keep the truck decelerating in a manner congruant with the steering angle sensor.

WIth ABS, you just mash the pedal and it will take over. Unlike panic stopping with out ABS.

When I obtain a new to me vehicle with 4 wheel ABS I make it a point to find a dirt road or a frozen parking lot and take it for a few test stops at speed.

It is really amazing that you can continue to steer through the ABS application. You just have to re-program the old noggin as to what is going to happen contrary to the old "Pump the pedal on ice" scenario.....

Bringing up the dirt road discussion-I would like to warn you all if you plan on driving on rough dirt roads at any speed disable your ABS(pull the fuse)The abs gets confused and you will get a rock hard pedal leaving you with no brakes at least one member here has totaled his truck that way

I bet it does get confused especially if there are washboards and you are skipping over them....

The woods guys don't have trouble like that BUT they have 100 gallon transfer tanks in the back and a body full of tools, chainsaws and other crap....tends to keep wheels in contact with the road....

Well that almost makes me want to pull the fuse permanently for the way I use my truck. I've never had an issue with either of my trucks in that regard but I don't want to wrap it around a tree either.

I have my abs fuse marked with some touch up paint so I can find it in the dark.Pulling it before taking an off road romp at speed is my preference,I like the abs on the hiway in bad weather and not having that damn abs warning light on in the cluster
