I was on a 700 mile trip and 200 miles in I stopped to eat and engine would not restart. It would spin but not hit. I had it towed to garage and they tapped on fuel rail pressure sensor and sprayed ether and got it started. Told me not to turn off till I got home. I made it home and now it won't start. I have tapped on sensor and won't start. Any ideas? This is 2004 5.9

Sounds like module on injection pump, next time it does that pour a bottle of water on it, see if that helps, my 01 did that , water would cool it off....I had to replace injector Pump, can't just replace the module

He doesn't have a VP44 pump on an 04 so I don't think that trick applies here.

What is the rail pressure during cranking?

Try ether again, if it starts ther eis either 2 much injector return, loose cross over tube, or starter is not cranking engine fast enough.

I had that same scenario happen, I had leaking injectors that wouldn't allow the rail pressure to reach it's minimum pressure (5000 psi I believe) that would allow the truck to start. By leaking I don't mean into the engine, it was going to the return line. There is a test you can perform to see if you have excessive return, google it and you'll see some videos' on it, takes about an hour to do. I was able to find one bad injector and two that were close to while the other 3 were well within spec so I replaced the 3 suspect injectors and it ran great for years afterwards.

Thanks to all, I am going to check the return line. A few weeks back the point where the return line pushes onto the metal line going to tank was leaking so I put a clamp on it. The rubber hose may be deteriorated on the inside. I will check this next.

Clamping the return line work, at worst it will blow the solenoids off the injectors. The injector return is routed thru the head and back into the CP-3 and PRV return. If you plug it bad things can happen to injectors. You replace the injectors to fix the problem.
