Where to go in Virginia

Guys,

I'm looking for the part number for the Snap on or Cummins toolset to set pump timing on 94-98. 5 12V. I'm looking at purchasing the set and learning how to do it myself.

The Snap On timing set is: SP500 cost $200. 00

The Snap On barring tool is: YA9565A cost $48. 40

The barring tool is a handy item for rotating the engine in either direction. I use a 3/8" universal, 3/8" to 1/2" adapter, then two long 1/2" drive extensions up to the front of the engine where I have a ratchet. I like this better than turning the engine with the alternator nut.

The set that I used was Snap-on and it was lebled diesel engine service kit... . or something like that. The guy I borrowed it from said it was about $1500. If I can get what I need for $200 I'm interested.

The Miller tool set includes that barring tool. I don't know what they are getting for it now. When I got mine it was something like $180 if I remember correctly. It's been a while.

timing set

Check out Schley tools. They list a timing kit and a barring tool. Don't know the prices, but most of their tools are reasonable.

The cheaper snap on set is just a dial indicator and pump gear puller for p-pumps. You will also need the barring tool, delivery valve socket and pump bolt wrench. The expensive kit comes with injector line socket, tachometer, fan clutch wrench, valve adjusting tool, pump wrenchs for p-pump and 1st gen pump, feeler guages, cmpression adaptor and guage, delivery valve socket for p-pump, barring tool, injector puller, and a dial indicator for the 1st gen. There may be a few I left out but thats about it. I've got about 2000. 00 in all of it. Jake

The SP500 come with the dial indicator and holder, delivery valve socket, and gear puller. IMHO the only think you need is a barring tool to make it complete.

I looked at my set today and the SP500 did come with the delivery valve socket. If you have to remove a pump you will need to make a wrench to get at the 14 or 15MM nuts that hold the pump to the case.

As long as you follow the service manual you will be fine. Make sure you clean the shaft and gear bore well. If they are oily the timing will slip and you will get more practice than you want. Just wiping the shaft and gear off won't cut it. I did that on my first KDP case and it slipped within about 200 miles. Now I clean them with carb cleaner and blow them off right before I tighten the nut down. Jake
