Fellow TDR Members:

I have been reading posts at the TDR for a while and finally decided to join up. This site is what convinced me to trade in the Ford for a Dodge, thanks.

Now onto business. I have a howling noise that sounds like it's coming from the passenger side vent. I found some info on the site technical service bulletins, but it doesn't really say what the fix is. It only makes the noise at lower RPM's and at part throttle. Any help is appreciated.

There used to be a restrictor in the heater core lines,im not sure where, but this casued a noise similar to what your describing, other than that, could be the turbo whine?

Welcome to the TDR - good stuff here, but apparently you already know that. Check different positions of heater/air conditioning. I know some vehicles have "howling" type noise from the A/C lines but I don't know of anything on Rams. Could low on A/C refrigerant? Or a bad A/C compressor? P/S can make noise when cold, but is on drivers side. Something to check anyway - hope you find it.

There were a few '98's with this howl. The coolant flow restrictor was located on mine in the fitting that threads into the engine head on the passenger side. Remove the hose on top first, then unthread the fitting from the head. You can just pry out the rubber looking washer, kind of like a garden hose looking seal.

If that was the howl, there was a TSB that replaces this restrictor or just leave it out all together. It was my understanding that it was to reduce the coolant flow to the heater core.

I had a passenger side howling noise and what I found was the boot between the air box and the fender had come loose and was rattlin and flappin and it went rollin and I aint heard it since... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Kevin

The howling heater fitting was on he 98. 5's and 99's with the gold colored fittings and really only noticealbe on the stickshift trucks. You can do like what icarus33 said... remove the restrictor, or you can try to get a dealer to replace the gold annodized fitting for the updated black annodized one.

Thanks for all the help guys. It's too darn cold here (4 degrees) to look at it now but when it warms up I will check out the coolant hose idea.

Inquiring minds want to know!"

After I wrote the post I figured I set myself up:D :D

Vance,

All in good fun. Actually there is some truth in that for me. I have a very slight hearing loss in my right ear at about the frequency where the human voice is found. I blame it on my wife sittinng in the passenger seat all these years. I have just tuned her out. :)
