If your '96 ever loses the speedo and tach, all warning lights come ON, the Alt stops charging, and the automatic goes into "Limp" mode, check for a failed two buck 20A fuse before you get towed to the dealer! I found a broken fuse. . probably from vibration because there was no melting or flash evidence. It was underhood in the relay box, and marked "Fuel Pump". You'd think this fuse was not used on the mechanical fuel pump CTD model, but you'd be wrong. Unplug yours and see! The replacement from NAPA has much shorter leads internally, so it may not resonate like the old one. I bought one extra of each amp rating to be safe.

Looking at the FSM wiring diagrams it looks like it (fuse 8) is a power source to the PCM and powers the trans relay which sends power to the Trans solenoid assembly.
