August 25 the wife tells me the truck is broken, it won’t shift. I checked it out and it worked OK. Next morning it didn’t shift for me either. It starts out in 3rd gear when in auto shift. When I start out in 1st gear it wouldn’t shift up. After a few miles I can manually shifts up through the gears but won’t go into overdrive. Eventually I discovered it was not locking up the TC because the Trany temp went up when doing nothing but driving at normal road 55 mpr. speed.
I called DTT for advice, they told me to be ready to do some voltage checks and probably adjust the box on the firewall next to the computers (PCM). Next morning I went fishing approximately 60 miles one way. Eventually the “check gauges” light came on and the Alternator was not charging.
Drove back to Homer and to a garage where they checked the generator output. It was 0 volts. Called DTT again and they made suggestions to the mechanics to trouble shoot the problem. Eventually they determined that the PCM was not triggering the alternator to charge the battery. They were able to manually trigger the alternator to go into charge mode and that works. There were no PCM’s available in Alaska so I called DTT & they were able to find one at Columbia Dodge in Richmond BC. and send it to Homer. We called the Kenai dealership and they told us the truck would not run until the PCM was programmed. Tomorrow morning we are towing the truck to Kenai (2 hours away) for PCM instillation and programming.
The PCM has been replaced with two new ones with the same resultant indications. Called Bill for more ideas and he suggested checking the Governor Pressure sensor/transducer (56041403AA). I called the dealer with this info and they will do the checks, and then return to looking for loose or broken wires wire by wire (sounds very time consuming meaning expensive). My truck appears to be a mix of 98-98. 5- and 99. So the maintenance manuals are little help in this particular area. Apparently the drive line parts are of the book are correct but the charging and fueling parts are not. So there is another level of frustration to be dealt with. According to my books, there are only two things that control the firing of the Alternator, the battery temp sensor and the Crank sensor, both have been checked. All the wiring has been painfully checked with no problems encountered. All grounds have been checked with no problems.
The dealership has had the truck for over two weeks now and still no progress. We are still stuck in Homer AK. with snow soon to fall. We need to get out of here soon so any ideas would be most helpful.
