Unless you're referring to the 6. 7 engine, no PCV system is used. It is simply an oil separator and an external draft tube.

it's an 05, 5. 9, the article had instructions on how to get it off. I'm finding it difficult to remove and don't want to force it.

thanks p dog, i did what you said and it came off. the diesel guy a dodge said they can't be cleaned and should just be replaced. and they should be replaced every 75000, according to his cummins rep. thanks again. norton

If the engine has been maintained properly, it should be as clean as the day it was new. I fell for that trick on a 7. 3 Ford once on replacing the CDR valve, but the old one was still like brand new. Save your $ and leave it alone.

It's an air/oil separator. Even if it were filthy, I'd just clean it out and reuse it. In my opinion, it has a perpetual lifespan.

Remember, it has no filter - it's just your average run-of-the-mill air/oil separator. In my opinion, anyone selling these based on some service interval either doesn't know how an air/oil separator works, or is trying to make extra money.
