Hey guys, it's going on two months now with the PE pump, thought I'd give an update for anyone who already has this pump or is considering same.
First off, 2 months of use is no great time trial for a pump, even for me
. The shortest a Mallory 4150 ever made it was 4 months, the longest was 8 months, so this one has some more months to get under it's belt before I get too excited. Regardless, here's the update... .
All has been well up to about 1 week ago, when I noticed that my at idle psi's were down about . 5 psi. No big deal, thought that the weather, etc. , could contribute to a plus or minus of 1/2 a psi. Today I noticed that the psi's were now down to a loss of about 1 psi at idle ( was about 15. 5 psi's at idle, now about 14-14. 5 psi's at idle). What concerned me more was the pump seemed slower to respond after a let off the go pedal, up until the last week it snapped right back to it's normal range when not under throttle. I decided to call Performance Engineering and spoke with Mike. Mike stated that I should check my voltage at the pump, which I did with a multimeter and all was fine. While neither Mike nor myself were too concerned about a 1 psi loss, I wanted to know why it lost the pressure and quick rebound it once had. Mike's next guess was that the coil spring, within the pump, had somewhat relaxed, causing the drop and the slower response back to normal after throttle. Mike explained the procedure to remove the spring, which I perceive to be part of the internal bypass assembly( ala deadhead type adjustement on the Mallory, without the luxury of a simple hex nut), stretch it ever so slightly, back to it's original length and then replace same. I did and now all is well again. In fact, I probably went just slightly over it's original length, as I now have a rock solid 16-16. 5 psi's at idle. It also recovers quickly to its normal range, when not under throttle. Simple cure for sure
.
Mike went out of his way to help me and stated that he would send a new pump to me if this one should be actually failing (under warranty). This guys are great folks to do business with, sure hope the pump lasts in the long haul. If all I have to do is reset the coil spring every once in awhile, I will be a very happy camper. The job took a total of 5 minutes, no need to remove the pump for the adjustment. I thought I'd throw this info out there for any that might be using this pump, not sure if anyone else has installed it yet other than myself and CScott. Be good or don't get caught.
