Hey all-

Just got back from a 2000+ mile road trip out to California and back with my brand spankin' new PE Comp installed.

I got the thing a week before my trip, and had been experimenting with all the new power and the settings around town. On level 5, like I have heard, the thing takes off like the space shuttle and smokes about the same as the solid fuel boosters, which is fun in it's own right. I usually leave it on level 3 in town, lots of extra giddy-up without the smoke.

I took to the desert last Monday, leaving myself the hottest part of the drive from Kingman to Barstow during the hottest part of the day during a heat wave. I left the Comp on setting 2 for the drive out.

The first thing I noticed was how cool the thing was running with the Comp in. EGT's hit 1100 once, but that was racing a Duramax up a hill in 110 degree heat outside of Kingman @ 95 mph. Boost was pushing 30 at that point as well. I figured that was all ok since the Duramax apparently blew up! I was smoking him, and suddenly black smoke came flying out from under the hood and out of the tailpipe. Last I saw of him he had hit the hazards and was pulling off to the side of the road. Pity to see a brand new $40+k truck die like that.

Other than that, EGT's averaged under 800 degrees preturbo with the cruise set at 75 mph.

Another pleasant side effect was an almost 2 mph increase in MPG's! I would normally be limping in to Kingman running pretty empty from Albuquerque, but I never even hit 1/8 tank on that part of the drive, and that was with a slight headwind! The boost would come up sharply on steep hills, hitting around 25 pretty often. I've never experienced any kind of lag on hills before, but I'd have to say that it just felt "snappier" driving it now.

I'm basically saying that I'm tickled pink with my new toy. I was going to buy an EZ, but I figured that for only $200 more that I should go all the way. Very glad that I did.

Death Of A Duramax

Thanks a lot for the terrific field test report.

I must be a sick puppy cause I found that amusing:) How many shots did you fire into the hood before the Dmax peeled off!:D

This is good to hear. If I ever get my pinprick connector I can go blow up a phord or dmax  . Sam. HVAC you are too funny. :D

Dead Dura...

Was the D-max even towing a load???

Another good one... A neighbor of mine bought a Duramax. Too bad, but the funny thing is how he got the truck. It turns out the person ordered the D-max, drove a Dodge a week later, and ordered a new Dodge instead. He left the dealer hanging on the D-max, and my neighbor bought it (He is a diehard chevy guy).

LOL:D :D :D poor chebby driver... Wonder how he's gonna explain that to his service manager... . I too just came home from CA - I was towing the 27' Terry there and back. Got between 12 and 14 mpg and could easily embaress my brother in his powerjoke pulling a 29' 5ver. (Yes I know. . he had at least a ton on me... ) Towards the end of the trip I was following a new 3500 king cap dmax/allison. He was loaded up with a 12' camper and a 20' fiberglass boat behind on a trailer. Traffic was bad so I couldnt get around him for quite some time, but what surprised me was the fact that he was slowing down so much on the hills - he was running about 70mph and slowing to 60 on the hills.

IS YOUR TRUCK STOCK OTHER THAN THE PE COMP?

Reggie -

Dying to know if your truck is stock ie: exhuast, injectors, etc. other that the PE Comp?

Should I expect similar results with my stock ETH/DEE? I gotta know!!!!! :D

BTW: sounds like your truck turned that Cheezy into a "Dura-snack" !!!! LOL I crack myself up!...

To RAMalama

RAMalama-

Other than the guages and a K&N filter, I'm all stock (for now, cuz I'm sure I'm going to eventually have to shell out for a new clutch, then there's all the fun goodies after that).

I've heard others say that they see pretty substantial MPG increases, but HVAC told me that most of those guys are pulling heavy. All I know for sure is that my truck runs a whole lot better than it used to. For what it's worth, I pay for that highway MPG by a reduction around town, but I'd imagine that's just because I tend to jump on it a lot more at lights just because it's so damn fun.

By the way, I picked up the Comp from Nowel (HVAC), who was a serious help. I typically find the people who are associated with this site to be very cool when it comes to awesome customer service, not to mention that I think we should all do what we can to support our own.

How easy are they to install? You have to slice wires and all that dont you?. Does the box go in the cab?

Sky,

You have to connect to the pump wire and the power wire inside the cab. The other plugs into the map sensor and the data link. The box is inside, 5 levels.

Comp Install

Sky-

It's easier than you might think, and that's coming from a guy who is wrench retarded.

The directions are very easy to understand, and you don't have to cut any wires or anything. I found the hardest part was running the wiring harness from inside the cab where the box mounts to under the hood, and that's just because I was so chicken to cut a little hole in the rubber nerd where the main harness goes through the firewall. It took me maybe an hour including trying to figure out where some of the connections went (I didn't even know what some of the plug-in connections were that they were talking about--like I said wrench retarded) and putting everything back together. I'm sure that the guys around here who know what they're doing could install it in 15 minutes.

My recommendation is to go for it. You'll be glad you did!

Hey guys that PE comp sounds good to me. Where do you order one and what do they cost? Also should I upgrade auto trans. before installing it or just be careful not to abuse the trans. since I tow medium heavy loads - 9000 to 11000#? Thanks beforehand for any advice.

I bought mine from Fred@ www.canyonstatecomponents.com and got a great price :) . Sam

Thanks DAWG-1

I have contacted them by e-mail and will probably order one as soon as I can talk to a sales person. Thanks again!

Dawg-1, you should have it tomorrow. Still puzzles me that it was missing. That hasn't happened very often. Call me or e-mail me when you do, so I can know your ready to smoke some D-Max's or Fords.

Will do Fred. Thanks for all your help. It looks like maybe the turbo next after I do the fuel pressure gauge. Sam :D
