Ready to buy:D. Have EZ now, changing to PE Comp. I hear so many good things about DD2's. Will I gain much with the comp by going to DD3's instead of DD2's. Could I get some feedback from someone that has gone both ways?

At what point do I need to upgrade turbo?

Thanks,

TC

Hello,

I have DD2's but I am going to Super mentals:eek:

If I was to choose between the two I would go with DD3's. You can always turn down the box to help with egt's for everyday use. Just my $. 02 worth... .

at this point I guess you should decide whethwer you want the most bang for the buck, or just the most bang. Personally I would go for the most bang... . speed costs, so how fast do you want to go?

Yes it is time for a new turbo!

What do you want to do with this truck?

Feedback I took into consideration indicated that if you tow and/or drive at higher altitudes, the DDIII's may give you excessive smoke and EGT issues. I went with the DDIIs and it appears my smoke and EGT control with the Comp box is sufficient. Once I have the DTT stuff (installation this weekend!), I'll be able to really give it a workout and find out what the limits are. My fear is at that point I'll wish for more, and always wonder about the IIIs. Sometimes I haul a horse trailer over the continental divide at 11,000 feet. Smoke is a consideration and that pushed me to the II's.

It seems to me (very unscientific observation here) that tuning down the fueling submenu in proportion to the power menu (5x1) genuinely does reduce low-boost-induced smoke. And, for entertainment value the reverse is true: running on 1x5 is a great way to fog those chopped-and-dropped bumblebee Honda's buzzing around. :D

If you don't tow, don't care about smoke, and have the intake and exhaust opened up to allow it to breathe, you might do well with the IIIs. I'm guessing from lurking on the threads on here that if you do that, and EGT's are still out of control, your next requirement may be a bigger turbo. $$$

Good luck.

DD2's are very nice. If you think you want 3's, turbo too especially with the Comp. EGT's will be up there.

Ask DAWG-1 how he likes his setup. He's in your area.

I have the Comp with Bully Dog III's and Piers Turbo for 427HP. I had the HX40 on for 453 HP but didn't like the turbo lag while driving around town or towing. With Piers turbo it is a blast to drive around town!

Oh, I might mention, while in traffic, I came upon a 1 ton with "Dr. Performance" in big letters across his tailgate. Needless to say, I pull up next to him and made sure we made eye contact. He had traffic in front of him, my lane was open so I just goosed the "White Obsession" a little. Quite a bit of traffic, he passed me later. Then it change to 3 lanes, I moved to the 3rd lane and eased up on him. He must of say me coming because when I was about 1 1/2 truck lengths behind him he hammers it. OH BOY, here we go! I lowered the #15 to the floor, and the wonderful sound of the Jardine came alive while the Cummins jumping to life! I immediately started to pull him really hard, he's looking in his rear view mirror for me, but surprise, surprise! I wasn't there. He checked he side mirror and saw me coming, he shut down because of traffic before I could get by him, but I'm sure the "White Obsession" left an impression on him. :p :D

I sure he won't forget the "White Obsession", can't wait to see him again when I can finish the job!

I still say get the biggest injectors installed first (stage 3's),then decide on box upgrades from there. The injectors have way better driving habits than boxes do. In our area you can't drive around with the big injetors and the box on... you'll be leaving the box off or set very low like the rest of us.

That is the exact reason I went with the DD3's. I can drive all day in town and out with the 3's. I have done many WOT tests to see what Max egt is and it is a nice 1150 deg with just the 3's and the EZ... ... . Then when I want to smack someone down I turn on the PE and away I go.

makes sense so bear with me

Mike, with the traffic situation around here this probably makes sense. I am looking for good manners around town, with plenty of power when I want it. 350-400

So for drivability stage 3's with a lower box setting is better than stage 2's with a higher setting?

If this is a stupid ? please bear with me.

YES, I WANT MY CAKE AND EAT IT TOO!

So I want DD3's to but am affraid I won't be able to tow. So lets get it clear. If I have DD3's and turn my Comp off and tow a 4000 pound boat up a long hill my EGT's should be in check? Altitude would be sea level to 4000 feet max. I'm waiting until after Christmas shopping is over before I get them but can't make up my mind on which ones. Any help would be great.

Exactamundo!

Jtroiano,

You won't have egt problems with the 3's, your egt's will be lower than with a box cranked up.

One more time

OK, I'm looking for power across the board, not just peak numbers on the dyno. So am I hearing that bigger turbo gives me bigger numbers on top but at the expense of bottom end, or that it just enables me to use the extra fuel at high end.

I'm used to gas motors.

In October I purchased a 28' Travel Trailer in Seattle, after BD Dyno Days I towed it back to Post Falls, Idaho. The trailer weighed about 6000#. I came over Snoqualmie Pass with the Comp set at 4x4, Egt's at 1200 degrees, speed with tire compensation was 70 mph (up and over the top) and had a whole bunch of throttle left. I have Bully Dog III's. I was really impressed. That is the nice thing about the Comp, the adjustability.
