Just returned from 4 month trip to the big RV rally in Gillette WY via New Orleans. Pullling 29ft 11300lb 5th wheel. No problems with the 93 dually. Averaged between 13 & 14 mpg. When going through mid-west, (NB,IO,MO) hit heavy rain. No hail. The paint on the bed of truck started comming off in sheets. Befor leaving the tail gate started peeling and I had it painted. Just the small strip above the red strip. Cost $73. Just dropped truck off to have both sides of bed stripped and painted for $434. So far $500. Has anyone had this problem and has DC helped with cost? Color of course is white... . Shopping for new 6 speed, but wall street is not helping right now.

Seen this problem before but it is not too common. The usual cause is that the part were not properly cleaned before painting. I have seen this happen at a local stamping plant when the wrong oil was used when pressing the parts, it was not compatible with the cleaning process used after the body pannels were assembled.
Best cure is to go down to bare metal and clean thoroughly with laquer thinners or precleano. Paint stipper leaves a slight residue that is hard to remove, best to keep wiping until the rag stays clean. Best to prime over bare metal with a wash type primer, this stuff bites rite into the surface (suggest you get a pro to do this, nasty to work with). Follow with epoxy primer , dont leave the areas that are primed exposed to dampness, primer tend to absorb water and after finish painting the water can't get out. The factory base coat clear coat seems to be fairly durable. Just remember all the paint products used should be the same brand to avoid any future problems. Pro painter should also be willing to stand behind the job they have done for at least 2 years, if they are doing good work.

Hey Drifter, If you do a search i'm sure you'll find a good couple of threads on this subject, and you'll likely find a post or 2 by myself. I have an electric Blue '92 and it is peeling in places that haven't been redone yet, which is the whole bed and roof and cab sides. I see plenty of trucks and cars (and not just Chrysler) that do this "hard boiled egg shell" peeling thing. I would put some stock in the last post, but I see the primer staying behind after the paint is gone. I see a two tone truck like ours in my travels where it's my Blue and the light blue, my color is almost gone and the light blue looks great, so I believe the paint color/ quality has something to do with it. When I bought my Truck, I had the balance of the premium 7/70 plus warranty and I've used it for mechanical claims, but when I brought up the paint I was told by 2 dealers in my area that the paint deal was for only up to 3 yrs old I fought a bit but gave up.

Drifter,
Forget DC. You are probably gonna need the entire truck re-painted. Otherwise it will continue to peel off from front to back much as mine has. Silver/grey and flaking.

I'm not a painter and I don't even play one on TV,but after talking to some rather knoledgable people in that business,I've found what I believe to be the main cause of pealing paint on Dodge as well as other brands. Back around the late 80's or early 90's the Gov. forced the paint industry to change their paints to reduce VOC's(volitle organic chemicals (sp?)). It took the paint people a few years to realize a problem and change chemicals to prevent the pealing issue. Newer paints should not have the problem as long as good proceedures are used as noted in the other posts. Just my 2ct.
