Looking for service in NY

I just got a tidbit of info from a mechanic friend of mine. Some info that might be of interest to us...

While still exempt from emissions testing, they will be looking for a catalytic converter and any other emissions equipment. They will fail you for not having them.

Another interesting piece is that those with stacks will now require hand guards. Not sure how much of the stack (height above/below bedline) will need covered.

And something else that won't affect most of us is that if you have a cap on your bed, the exhaust must exit from under the truck... it can't simply dump behind the cab anymore.

Just be forewarned, its been a long time coming.

The visual inspection requirement for emissions equipment has been in place for at least a year or so now.

On a side note, one of the annual update manuals for PA inspection stations (can't remember if it was 2007 or 2008) ,showed the incorrect required equipment for the pre Jan 1, 2007 built 2007 trucks. I believe they have the 2009 update literature correct.

If that's the case, then they didn't notice mine. And this was just recent... like last week.

I've been told about the hand guards also. I had to have them on mine to get it inspected. The "guard" is considered a pipe-in-a-pipe. The pipe can be inside or outside the stack. I put a section of stove pipe inside each of the stacks and that passed inspection. You can't see it unless you look down inside the stack.

Heat shield

I had a local P. D. stop me after 8 years and told me I needed heat shields on my stacks

I told him he was nuts. :-{} I said all class 8 trucks that have heat shields have them on the mufflers that hold heat not the stacks. I said look at my tarp it's not melted because the stack don't get that hot

#ad

I said put your hand on the stack you just stopped me and it is only warm it will not burn you

Then I reminded him that I pay his wages with my taxes that his time would be better spent going after drug dealers and high speed Honda's & Subaru's

He got in his car and left. :{

People that make rules like this are nuts.

The cat is only for "05" and up right?

My "03" did not come from the factory with a cat, and I just replaced the complete exhaust with a 4" Stainless System no cat.
