This is van Aaken's response to my question about the addition of timing to the VA C3. 2 ...

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately, there will not be timing added to the existing board as

the hardware is not there to do it. I'm afraid that adding the timing

function was a rumour that was started on a forum and it is definitely

not true.

Regards

I was told many times the hardware was in place. Never ceases to amaze me what these dealers will say to sell thier boxes.

I certainly heard that rumor on here, guess I'm glad I didn't run out and buy a vA pulse box :(

I have always wondered why the pressure box wasn't more popular, I think it puts the least strain on the injection system than any of the other boxes available.

Danny at Precision Diesel is where I heard it. He said that they were involved with the development of the unit and that the hardware was in place.

interesting. What I was told is that they were hoping that the hardware would support timing, but that was not guarenteed because development was not yet finished on the timing function. I remember posting that it was kind of a gamble to depend on that, but frankly Alex's comments do come as as surprise to me -- we have basically two statements in total disagreement. One says they hope they can do timing on the existing hardware the other says that was never the case. I asked Danny to work on resolving this to see what happened in the communication.

but at no time did anyone to my knowledge ever guarentee that the hardware was in place for sure.

The statement about no one guarenteeing anything may very well be true but it makes absolutley no sense to sell something that is only 15% usable. I loved this box till I heard all of this stuff about timing not being available, I was hopeful that they would get this done to solve the high egt. Even on 50% this thing is way too hot on the 600. They should have solved the timing issue before they started peddling this piece of junk.

yea I hear you on the 600. I think the EGT issue is bad enough on the 305. looks like even with your 4" exhaust and intake system you still have a bad problem. that really is a bummer. I think I'd be talking to Danny or whoever you got it from and say that is just is not usable.

Doug,

Danny DID tell me that the hardware was in place. There was no "hopefully" involved in his statement and we spoke three times before I purchased. His statement is what swayed my decision towards the VA.

Just for the record...

woa, that sucks. perhaps I pressed a bit harder for detail or something. I always understood that the hardware was believed to be in place but that there was some uncertainty, due to the fact that the timing project wasn't completed. Maybe what we can hope for is a separate timing box that would stack. For now I'm coping by mixing in a little pressure. For the 600 guys I dunno though. dern thing just runs toooooooo hot.

sure haven't. I'd think Piers would probably have a good solution, though, with their G1 modiifed turbo.

Thought I'd kick this one back to the top and see if anyone has heard anything about Van Aaken doing a timing box.

I had another issue I e-mailed VA about. They were great on the answer and as a note I asked about the timing and got the same response as at the top of this thread. Here it is:

Although there have been some rumours of timing being added to this box they are not true, unfortunately the hardware needed to adjust timing is not present in this box so it is a physical impossibility to upgrade existing units it in this way.

Luckily the 50% setting on my SO does not run too hot. I have it stacked with a pressure timing box and I can't yet use full settings on both. I'm hoping the new turbo and exhaust will help to cure that!

well, as they were the first to deliver duration we were all hopeful that they would cool things down with timing. I haven't heard any confirmation that they are even working on a timing/duration box with new hardware, so this just makes me sad that the competition field will just be narrower in that space.

meanwhile, the best use of the C3. 2, will probably continue to be on the mild settings and stacked with pressure. without timing advance, the net retardation of timing results (at high power settings) in late fuel delivery, inefficient power generation, and high exhaust gas temperatures. excess air from an upgraded turbo will certainly help, but, unfortunately, what we've learned over the last several months is that the C3. 2 is limited. One potential upgrade might be injectors, but the absense of timing advance will still haunt us as a disapointment.

Another stack might be a downloader, but I doubt this would yield any real improvement, as the downloader will probaby yield just as much duration as the C3. 2 itself, and it will do it with timing advance.

The best stack would be a timing/pressure box, and currently the only choice here is the Banks six gun with speed loader. Timing advance with this box is, according to my tests, enough to measure as an EGT benefit, as it runs 100 degrees or so cooler (on the dyno) than traditional aggressive pressure boxes in the same horsepower range.

I made a plug for my VA to keep it at the 50% setting and took the switch right out. Then there is no temptation to crank it up all the way when I'm playing. Once I get the new stuff on I should be able to run the other box at full setting with the VA at 50% with no EGT issue's. Hope to get ti on a dyno then to see what the numbers are.
