hi

im writing under my dads name. my name is Dan, im a 17 years old kid with 3 jobs and and not alot of money, i bought a 1990 cummins from mississippi about a month ago (which is why i dont have any money) and im looking for ways to make big power for aslittle money as possible. as of now the only thing that i have done to the truck is turned the fuel pump up 3 1/2 turns. i am looking to put a 4" turbo back exhaust, ( what exhaust housing should i use ?) i am also looking to put injectors in ,what is the biggest injector that i can put in ? i have heard that there is and adaptor on the market that allows you to put 2nd generation injectors into 1st genration motors. my final question is about inercooling , as of right now i cant afford to even think about inercooling my truck but i would like to know if it really improves performance enough to make it worth doing eventually if any of you have the parts i have listed and or others, and would be intersted in selling them at resonable price my email is -- email address removed --

thanks for your help

Dan,

The original non I/C injectors are pretty good so you won't see as much gain with the performance injectors as most report here. So for your budget reasons I'd recommend sticking with the stockers for now. If you upgrade you should probably get PODs. They are about the best bang for the buck if you don't mind a little smokiness.

The adapters you speak of are readily available. They look like a "top hat" and are both a reducer bushing and sealing washer combined.

But you can't swap in 2nd gen injectors directly because the thread size for the injector lines are different.

I hope a pyrometer and boost gage are on the top of your "to buy" list..... you really need them to protect your engine from meltdown and to monitor performance gains.

I like the 16 cm exhaust housing as it improves driveability, yet keeps backpressure down as I do a lot of highway driving at 70+. If most of your driving is in town then perhaps a 14 cm might do well. Others will advise I'm sure.

That should give you something to chew on for a while.

Welcome and good luck.

Keep your stock injectors in there. get them cleaned up if you want, but I wouldnt go any bigger. Your pump can flow enough fuel for 300HP easily.

GET A PYROMETER!!!!! At 3-1/2 turns on the fuel screw, you are going to melt a piston for sure. Put the t-couple in the manifold and drive by it. Get a 40psi boost gauge to complement it, and put it in a pod either on the dash, or on the A-pillar.

Exhasut will help, as will a BHAF (Big Honkin Air filter). I'd recommend against K&N, though others in less dusty climates do fine with them.

turbo upgrades-I managed to plumb in a PDR HX35 on my early 91, and have pictures of it somewhere. Maybe reader's rigs, maybe Mom's computer. The stock H1C is small from the early ones, especially compared to the aftermarket upgrades, but you get into some serious cash there.

I know all about getting performance on a budget- I'm still there.

Welcome to the 1s tgen forum. You wont want to drive anything else after you get used to punching the accelerator and GOING.

Get guages first, then a governor spring, about $16 from a bosch dealer. Do a search for the part #, the one you want the last 3 digits are 366. Definitely do a BHAF, do a search on that too, Scheid diesel can get you both of these items.

does inercooling add horse power? if so how much? were do i find a good dealer for first generation trucks?

ACtually, if it was me, I'd go for a 2nd gen cooler- bigger = more cooling. You'll ahve to cut holes for whichever intercooler youadd. may as well get the most cool for the buck. I have the stuff for a 2nd Gen intercooler, sans intercooler. I was going to put it in my 91, but never got around to buying an intercooler.

From what bgilbert told me, with his hot rodded pump, the intercooler added LOTS of bottom end (maybe it's good I didnt intercool my 91- clutch had a time keeping up as it was), and naturally, cut EGTs. In short, if you can afford it, you cant go wrong.

Per an engineering book I have something like 5 to 7 % if I recall correctly.

But that number is deceiving because intercooling will let you add more fuel withour sending your EGT into the stratosphere.

Or it lets the engine burn more fuel for longer... . which means your foot can stay to the boards longer, or you can tow a heavier load faster... . lots of ways to look at it.
