I have a 2002 3/4 ton (133,000 mi) with a Air Dog 100, brand new BOSH VP-44, gauges, early warning light, cold air intake, and a leveling kit. I still need to upgrade exhaust. The automatic 4 speed stock trans has been recently rebuilt to stock specs (unfortunately before I bought it).

I would like to start investing in some performance upgrades, but I want to make sure I'm getting the most bang for my buck without having to upgrade the transmission any time soon. Something subtle that makes a difference.

The truck runs great but I know it's capable of alot more power (nothing extreme though). I'm only getting like 18 lbs of boost. And it's really doggin off the line. What kind of upgrades should I be going for and which ones? Programmer? Chip? Injectors? Bigger Turbo? Intake elbow? Wastegate?

This truck is more or less a daily driver for now with the ocassoinal medium pull. Hook me up guys... I don't want to get the wrongs stuff in the wrong order and end up screwed.

Find a use Edge EZ. That tranyy will only take one upgrade. Two will do it in shortly. The EZ is a timing box and easy to install. One have to get one made for the 2002 model year to get the right plugs. Put a J hook and spring on the waste gate after install the EZ, as it will fool the overboost issue. HY35's should be kept to around 28lbs max boost. Chris

I've never heard of putting a "J hook and spring on the waste gate. " Could you elaborate on that a bit? I've got a stock HOLSET turbo but it seems smaller than other stock turbos I've seen. Thanks for the tips.

They sell the J hook and spring at BD diesel. I am sure they sell it at other places as well, but, I remember specifically seeing it in the BD catalog. It is basically a wastegate actuator. The part # for the BD unit is1045991 and the price in the catalog (at the time of print 6 months ago) is $55. 00.

If you are handy, you can make your own. I tried to find a picture of the one I made for my HY35 Turbo, however could not. Chris

Don't put the j-hook on with out the EZ. The EZ has a boost fooler built in to clip the volatge the ECM reads from the MAP sensor. With out that you will set over boost codes.

The EZ is a good choice, that is how I got started.

I ran an ez and j hook (parts from the local hardware store 5$) then I added rv275 injectors. That was really a nice setup. I didnt have any trans problems with that but I drive relatively conservatively not necessarily slow but would roll on the go pedal instead of mash it to the floor. My trans didnt have any issues for 110k and even then still wasnt having issues just decided I wanted more power and felt the trans was the next thing to do at that point before adding more power. The hy turbo (yes it is smaller compared to the also stock hx35 on the manual trans and earlier autos but it spools quicker) handled the ez and 275's just fine.

I did EZ and then Smarty after the EZ died after a few years, and then Smarty w\Edge Comp. Add a High Tech Turbo Super Stock 62\13, intercooler, CFM elbow, Snow digital water\methanol, F1 1. 6 injectors, and now your pushing 500 at the wheels and you can tow huge loads with ease. The bad news is you out over ten grand.
