I am thinking of having my rocker panels and flares sprayed with permatech sparayliner. They claim to garantee that it wont fade in the sun. Any of ya'll have experience with doing this? good or bad? It is costing me around $250.

I had mine done almost 4 years ago and it looks just as good today as it did then - hasn't faded at all. One of the best things I've done to my truck. I used to have to fix 20-30 rock chips a month on my rockers and wheel well lips before I had it done. Since having it done I haven't had to fix a single rock chip from rocks thrown up by the tires. I'd recommend checking out another truck that they've done if they have done one. Also, make sure they know EXACTLY where you want the bedliner material. When I had mine done I went in an checked where they had masked off before they sprayed. Here's the original post on it and some pics:

Rockers & wheel weels sprayed by Permatech (pics), no more rock chips!

I really really really want to do what Steve did. I have not done so yet because people keep telling me it'll look bad. I'd want to use black Line-X instead of the colored permatex, but it's the same principle. I think it's a great idea, but peer pressure has thus far prevented me from doing it.

:-laf I had my '04 linexed... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... lower panels front to back, the whole tail gate, the box. Looks good and no more chips of any kind. My truck is black and the guys did a great job.

Back in 2000, I had the rockers on my 98 sprayed with Permatech in Flame Red to match the body. Although I have not owned the truck for 3 years, I see it around occasionally and it still looks as good as the day it was done. I did it for similar reasons as Steve and could not have been more satisifed.

Every now and then it would occur to me that the color match seemed to be off, but I concluded after a while this was caused by the Permatech having different light reflecting properties than the paint. May or may not be an issue depending on the color of your truck.

Too early to tell yet if I will got his route with my '05 - don't spend nearly as much time on unpaved roads as I used to...

Cheers,

Mike

I had the rocker pannels on my '98 Chevy sprayed with Bullhide liner. It turned out excellent. The color was black but so was my truck. I want to have my '04 CTD done but it's blue so I'm not sure how it will look. I was quoted $800 to have my CTD done. I only paid $200 for my Chevy. If you can get it for a good price, I would do it again.

As far as the fading goes, it did seem to fade slightly but that was a different brand then what you're looking at and it wasn't much. It still looked really sharp and protected it great.

I haven't, but it's one of the first things I thought of, and depending on what happens, will probably do it at some point... graphite w/ black rockers. I wouldn't worry a bit about what anyone else thinks. Make the truck yours / no two alike... these aren't toyota's. :-laf

Has anyone seen a white truck done with the Permatech white color. This has crossed my mine maybe later on doing something like this. Then again I don't know how the white would blend in. Maybe I would have to go with a silver bottom and two-tone it.

Vern, where did you find the Permatech, somewhere local to us. :D

Permatech is not as tough as LINE-X, but close. LINE-X's tear strength is 304 pli, Permatech is 290 pli. Permatech's warranty is only with the dealer that sprayed it. LINE-X's warranty is nationwide.

But line-x doesn't warranty against fading or discoloration, only against chips or flaking. I was also considering this, but would want to go with white, and I'm not sure how bad the liner material would stain from the usual road-grime. IE: if I hit a patch of fresh asphalt and a few black specks sat on the white line-x for a few days, would it leave a brownish stain? That would be worse than the rock chips. Is there any company that warraties against this? I would think if there was a way they could add something to make the material less porous it would work great. Maybe that's why most people go with gray instead of white on the white trucks?

JD get out of my brain :-laf your post was my thoughts exactly. I was just to lazy to type it out. :D

Wouldn't the white yellow over time? I'm going to do it and was going to do Line-X, but if Permatech warranty's against fading I think I'll do that on the rockers in black.

Bart, I can't remember if Permatech warranties against fading, but I can tell you that I have an 8 X 10 utility trailer (lawn care business type), that I had sprayed black in 1998, and it has not faded... just wash it and it still looks new... .

Perma Tech does not have a nationwide warranty like LINE-X. The warranty is only with the dealer that sprayed it. If he goes out of business, your out of luck.

If you want to insure that LINE-X does not fade, have the dealer spray it with Ultrashield (their UV topcoat) or Dupont Nason paint, which is an automotive paint and will NOT fade. That's what most LINE-X dealers use for color matches.

As far as toughness against rock chips, etc. : LINE-X has a tear strength of 304 pli, Perma Tech is 290 pli. LINE-X is polyurethane and polyurea and is harder (shore D 45) than Perma Tech (shore A 95), which is a 100% polyurethane product.
