Ever notice how we tend to to be "lazy" if the opportunity is there? One thing that really gets my goat (I know, I'm wierd) is the use of slang that really murders our English language.

When did "probably" become "prolly"?

Have we let our good grammar fall by the wayside for the sake of convenience? Scary thing is, our kids will soon be accepting this as the norm, if they aren't already:--)

Perhaps I'm a grumpy old curmudgeon, but that kind of thing irritates me to no end... ... ... ... ...

It's just another step in the evolution of any language. Lots of words have gone through shortenings/modifications over periods of time to make them easier to say or shorter..... and per se and originally turned into ampersand comes to mind for some reason.

The one I hate is "let me 'ax' you a question". There is a gal at work that does this all the time. Yet she can say disk without any problems.

get someone's goat

Annoy or anger someone, as in By teasing me about that article I wrote, he's trying to get my goat, but I won't let him. The origin of this expression is disputed. H. L. Mencken held it came from using a goat as a calming influence in a racehorse's stall and removing it just before the race, thereby making the horse nervous. However, there is no firm evidence for this origin. [c. 1900]

Probably because they can't spell or are too lazy to do it right. Plenty here that can't.

I'm not saying I'm perfect, because I'm not. But, poor grammar and the lack of punctuation is a pet peeve to me also. There are some here and other sites, that there might be a period after a looooooog run on sentence.

After being an admin specialist with the Air Force for 20 years, bad grammer (either spoken or written) really gets to me. One of the worst is the use of "got". For example, "You've got questions, we've got answers (from Radio Shack commercials). When written out without the contractions, this would read "You have got questions, we have got answers". GET RID OF THE "GOT". It's repetitive and is just bad grammer. Obviously, the correct verbage would be, "You have questions, we have answers. "

Also, take your time to read what you've written before posting it to be sure you're using good grammer and spelling. It shows your intelligence - or lack thereof.

As the Sylvan Learning commercial say's "People judge you by the words you use."

When did "probably" become "prolly"?

And when did "regardless" become "irregardless"? Aaaaagggghhhh!!! It drives me crazy when I hear that non-word. It's a double negative and it is so overused, too.

My last sentence above brings up a common spelling problem for many people in the various forums I visit. To, two or too?

To - I am going to bomb my truck

Two - My CTD has two batteries.

Too - It is too bad I don't have the money for an Edge Comp. I would like another turbo, too .

ebonics are to blame i think. seems to be popular amonst the lower class people, who are not going to school and being educated. instead they join gangs and work at mcdonalds and other low income jobs. then there is the music [crap] many of the younger ones are listening to and they have all those words in lyrics [i hate "bling"]... now i am no where near perfect on spelling and grammer, and i don't really care either [WP has the spelling/grammer chech for me when i need it] and i did not do well in english class when i was in HS [just broke 70% to get out of writing the final exams]

i don't mean to single out any one ethnetic group if it sounds like i am. every one is guilty of it.

In addition to my sarcastic post earlier, one point comes to mind: do you remember a while back when spelling in schools was criticized? I seem to remember it was this “self- esteem” crap! Teachers wanted to not demoralize students by correcting their mistakes! “They” were more concerned that the pupils get the ideas out. After all- there IS spell check available to word processing programs. Spelling, to the instructors, was not important so long as the “creativity” comes through. It is as much the fault of the teachers and the system to allow this kind of crap to prevail.

Just let the children express themselves! As far as I'm concerned the right to expression is something you should just recieve at 16. Boom, there you go. An 8 year old kid doesn't even know what expression is. JMHO

Pet Peeve #1: People who use poor English grammer and spelling.

Pet Peeve #2: People who correct those using poor grammer and spelling, w/o being asked to.

Pet peeve #3 People who list their pet peeves ?:D

Just kidding, I agree. Pointing out peoples poor grammar and spelling is the height of rudeness.

Uh huh.........

Yup, like thets wy I wus kurful not to, like, name any names or ax anyone that prolly couldn't spell rite two... ... ... ... ... :D :D :D :D Oo. Oo.

The problem is the multiculturalism in this country. The integration of ebonics is horrible when you see the way some of these kids act. It's all the fault of MTV and the new racial blending we see today. It won't get much better! I see it all the time in college and it makes me sick, enough to make fun of the people to their face!
