Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Gun powder

Hunting my GermanShortHair for Pheasants in the the Dakotas is on my bucket list. I have been told that there is land that the state pays the land owner to allow the public to hunt on. I really cannot afford the trip, 1400 miles and then pay a guide and/or a lodge and such. Are there any of you that have done something like this before and can give some advice ? Or better yet some one with land in the Dakotas that has Pheasants on it and is welling to let me hunt them. I am a responsible and respective hunter and have been hunting deer, ducks and pheasant all my life. South or North Dakato, My Mothers parents were Germans from the Russian colonies that meet and married in the Wing North Dakota area where she was born. In the nineteen thrities they moved out so this area so it has a special pull on me. Thought I would give a try to the TDR brothers. I would be deeply grateful for any info or offers. Please PM me.

The land here in North Dakota is called PLOTS (private land open to sportsmen) and will become open to non-resident hunters this coming Saturday. You can probably view a map showing the location of these areas on the North Dakota Game and Fish website. The best pheasant hunting is in the southwest part of the state (Bismarck west), but the Wing area has alot of WPA's WMA's and PLOTS land to hunt and there are fair pheasant numbers in that area as well. Good luck!

Most of the high producing pheasant land in South Dakota that is privately owned is tied up in a hunting lease ($$$$) by someone, or group of someones, with way more money than you or I to spend on bird hunting.

Most farmers with CRP ground in less-than-high producing areas will allow you to hunt on their property, for either a small fee, or for free.

Some will let you hunt on production ground but some don't. Money rules during bird season in South Dakota.

There are lands leased by Pheasants Forever that are more affordable to the average Joe, but many of the farmers/landowners get tied up in leasing contracts with big corporations or wealthy individuals and are contractually obligated to not let you hunt on their property.

I grew up in Pierre, SD and hunted pheasants every chance I had. There is quite a bit of public land available to hunt. You'll put on a lot of miles but there are birds there. The state has walk in areas on private land-should be able to find these online. Also, Ft. Pierre national grasslands is public hunting-pheasants, grouse and maybe a few prairie chickens. You might want to call the SD Game, Fish, & Parks, they can point you in the right direction for public hunting. Good luck and happy hunting.
