A co-worker asked me to get info on his 350 powderchoked on the phord site... can't a-phord a computty #ad
. I got into the site and was baffled! Lots of glow-plug troubles, also there are a lot of owners who express love for the DODGE!

Now I was real surprised to find their membership about 7 times more than ours, especially when Dodge has over 40% of the diesel pick-up market! Thats a headscratcher #ad

I think the membership is so high because it is free. I am even a member, but have no intention of ever owning one. If it was $35 bucks US I know I would not be a member. Yup, they got some problems.....

John, I had no idea it was free. . that explains it. #ad
This guy at work is telling me that his '97 350 stroke's injector are "internal" #ad

Statland,
Your buddy is trying to say that his injectors are the HEUI type(if that is not right I am going to feel like an ars #ad
). These injectors are located underneath the valve covers; like an old detroit diesel.

So the injectors are "hidden"... how does one check compression? I wanna help this guy, it baffles me to find a grown man that lacks mechanical savvy. I remember when my Dad had my brother and I help rebuild a '64 DODGE 426 "wedge". It was an ex highway patrol car... hauled a$$. Had cast iron "headers". We learned a lot, I was 9 or 10. Dad was a mechanical engineer, he always told me to stay in school cause your hands will get tired... I'm a machinist... Dad was right after 25+ years in the trade my hands really hurt somedays.

Got to yapp'in... sorry

RE Miller...
Dont have to feel like an arse. . #ad
U are correct on this one. .
BTW... HEUI stands for Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injection.
basically means u better change engine oil every 3k miles... seeing as the oil is what the injector is *fired* by... . and if it isnt clean... major problems.
CAT and Navistar went together on this I beleive.

Statland,
Snap-on makes a tool set for checking compression among other things on the PSD. I would imagine that this is an ugly process, but then again I've never done it, so I wouldn't know. I'll just stick with cummins, they have been at this diesel thing just a wee bit longer then this new stuff.

The year 2000 numbers are not available yet, but in 1999 Ford sold 234K diesel powered trucks, Dodge sold 73K and GM combined for 9K. Ford outsells Dodge more than 2 to 1 in pickup sales. An additional engine assembly plant has been built to meet the demands. Ford sold it's 1 millionth PSD last year in less than a 5 year time span. There is no way Dodge has 40% of the diesel market... they don't sell enough trucks period to do that. It is still a hell of an engine worthy of the hamburger comparison above... CJ

Cobrajet,
I sure would love to see you show up in Muncie!
You, Johnboy and Dutch can lead the Ford team into Battle!LOL

Are you SURE Ford sold that many? Where are they?

Anyone know numbers on how many Fords are still running?

Don't forget Ford as made a Diesel pick up for what, 5 years ahead of Dodge?

McDonalds sells more burgers than anyone else, but that doesn't make them taste any better!

MGM, I think what Miller is saying is in refference to the Cummins. Rudolf invented it Clessie perfected it!

Well, there is no accounting for taste.

The numbers are from the May 2000 Automobile Magazine... not the monthy rag at the newstands, but the industry magazine detailing EVERBODIES production runs of everything they built and the breakdowns. There are way more PSD's running around here than Cummins. It is 3 to 1 for the PSD at every RV park we go to. Ford sells over 1 million F Series trucks every year. Having one out of almost five being a PSD doesn't seem strange to me. Just about the same ratio for the Dodge trucks. They are published numbers for everyone to read... CJ

CJ, Does this publication include out of the U. S. production. I'm baffled by your numbers cause I get different ones through multiple sources. Also we are talking diesel pickups not F450's and above. And Mcdonalds hamburgers SUCK!

Statland,
The stats are for total worldwide production. There is no reason to be rude... . the PSD outsells the Cummins, facts are facts. It is very common knowledge. There are probably more CREW CAB PSD's built every year than all of the Dodge config's combined. I wouldn't have a McDonalds burger either, but I would own a competitive CREWCAB. I am a past Cummins owner by the way who has ZERO problems with the truck except for the fact they do not build one that my kids can sit in for any length of time. Our favorite pastime is pulling the 5th Wheel so I was FORCED by a manufacturer to drive a competitive competitors product as are the other people who make the PSD the number one sold light duty truck sold in this country. The 93 Cummins is still in the family with over 300K miles... CJ

CJ, I did not feel anything I said was rude. however if you feel different, my apology.

I simply find it hard to believe that your and my numbers vary so much, and by the looks of it I am not alone on this one.

Just curious, if Dodge built a crewcab and you were in the market for a truck... would you?? Just curious, NO OFFENSE INTENDED #ad

Statland,
I have never seen anyone argue that Ford does not sell more diesels. Even if Dodge has 40 percent of the market in what you are reading, Ford has to have the greater percentage... . There is no way GM has 20 percent of anything in the diesel market. Not yet anyway. All they sold was 9K diesels and they had to give those away. The Cummins owners have always had the who cares that Ford sells more diesels anyway attitude with the thought that if they didn't make a CREWCAB they wouldn't, or at least I have a Cummins!!! It was the McDonalds hamburgers (AKA PSDS) suck that seemed to be taking us in the wrong direction. I will hunt a new truck in two years, the normal 4 year cycle. I will be at the Dodge dealer first like I was in 96, before buying my first CREWCAB PSD and again in 99 looking for a CREWCAB. Maybe they will hold true to their word this time and build one. I am not as loyal as most when it comes to trucks. When you are talking 40+ I want the best ALL AROUND and USEFUL product out there. The Cummins is a better engine... Ford has the right truck. It should be very interesting shopping in two years. I have never looked on the GM lot. From everything I am reading I doubt if I will this time either. Hopefully Daimler can figure out what Dodge never did... 4 real doors equal a lot of truck sales!!! I am going to go take some pictures of the old 93 Cummins and throw them up on the site. That should give me the split personality I am looking for..... CJ

Well said CJ.

I'm in your boat right now. I need a CC now and really wish that I could get one of those Brazil Super-Duties up here through customs and it not cost me $50k.

I guess the kids will have to put up with it for a while longer since I for one will never buy the first year model of any brand of truck.

Cobra's numbers are correct----one of our own posted them in/on this very site... ... unless my foggy memory is remembering stuff from the CDW site days. I recall going to another site where our member found those stats, and they were from a reputable source, as I recall.

Ford has the overwhelming numbers on their side, and GM is so distant it's beyond hilarious.
