Hi there,

This new to me truck I picked up a few weeks back has a wiper problem.

The wipers worked fine unless you put them on delay. Then they would usually stop mid stroke in the middle of the windshield.

I did a search & found some info. So I swapped out the combo switch & relay under the hood. Now they just run

whenever they want & the combo switch doesnt have any control over it at all.

What is going on here ?

Thanks---Proflow

To re-state the issue, what I understand is intially the wipers worked in low and fast postions as they should. When in any position of the intermittent mode they would make a pass then stop somewhere other than the park position. Would they continue cycling and stop in an other than park position, or just stop all together and stay in place until you recycled the wiper switch? Then the multifunction switch and wiper relay were changed, resulting in the wipers running all the time, regardless of the multifunction switch's position. Is this correct?

How about swapping the wiper relay with another one and check the multifunction switch's plug for proper seating. If that doesn't work my guess would be the park-run switch in the wiper motor or a CTM (Central Timer Module) issue, followed by a wiring issue where the tilt wheel flexes in the steering column. Since the symptoms changed when the parts were installed It could even be a bad multifunction switch.

You got it right,

I think I'll swap my wiper motor from my other (wrecked) truck tomorrow.

Is it under the left or right side cowl panel ?

My other truck had heated seats, is the CTM the same or different ?

Parts book says they are different. Probably work OK though - unless the plugs are different.

5 MODULE, Timing and Control
56020157AC 1 Without Keyless Entry
(Integrated)
56045448AE 1 With Keyless Entry (Integrated)

Should be slightly left of center under the cowl.

Try the relay first - it's the simple thing that can cause the constant running.

When you activate the wiper switch do you get slow speed only in off, intermittent (with no intermittent function) and slow positions and fast in the fast position?

OK, thanks for looking that up for me.
Any chance you might know the location that little bugger ?

The CTM should be on the inboard side of the instrument panel steering column opening. If you have the base model it only has one plug. The highline has two. It doesn't appear as though the base and highline have any interchangeability.

OK, so if I remove the knee bolster will I be able to see it or does the instrument bezel & panel have to come out ?

Just trying to gear up.

The truck has power windows, locks, mirrors, etc. (SLT Lariat) However no heated seats & not sure on the keyless entry. No remote w/used truck.

I missed this one:

"Try the relay first - it's the simple thing that can cause the constant running.

I pulled the relay & the wipers still were tweeking out. They will start & stop in the middle of the stroke then start again etc. no matter where the combo switch is. This is just sitting in the driveway. I pulled many relays thinking maybe I yanked the wrong one, but I pulled them all !

In fact I took the wipers off last night on the way home cause it wasnt raining !!!

The panel under the steering column should pivot downward. Grab the top and pull sharply downward. It snaps in place at the top and pivots at the bottom of the dash. You should then be able to reach through the access hole and remove two screws and plugs from the CTM.

I would try the following order of events:

1. Wiper Motor
2. Multifunction Switch
3. CTM

Very good,

Thanks for all your help, I'll post back my findings tomorrow after swapping parts.

Thanks again---Proflow

OK, got it fixed.

Turned out to be the wiper motor itself.

I just swapped out the whole assembly from my parts truck & it works perfect.

Thanks for all the help

Excellent! Glad it was an easy, economical fix, even thoujgh it was the one with the most screws, nuts and bolts, and stretching.

Thats OK, it only took about 1/2 hr. to pull down both trucks & assemble the one.

I'm just happy to have it fixed, its raining big time over here ! Thanks again
