1688=Internal Injection pump controller failure.

251 = Fuel injectiom pump mechanical failure valve feed back circuit.

252 =?

253 = Fuel injection pump fuel valve open circuit.

Thanks, Missouri Mule for the reply! And Yipes, now how big of deal is it to take out? And I suppose I will be into the geartrain also. So might as well look at that dowel pin too.

Oh and would anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced pump VP44? Also if I go one that is pumped up a bit. Would you know how much milage I will loose?

Where I got mine - Dodge Cummins Fuel Injection Pumps - OEM Stock Replacement

Worst part of the R & R was getting the gear to pop. This link should help give you an idea of the job - Bosch VP44 Replacement

This link is helpful as well - VP44 Dodge Pump Installation Instructions

It's a one day job taking your time. Some guys say they're able to do it in an hour or so, they must have all the necessary tools right at hand and have done the job a few times. I like to take my time and enjoy the work. Have fun.

Thanks Joe

thank you for the responce, and advice I will chech out that link or links. And I have to take my time not easy to get up and under the hood when it sits high like it is. Why in the world did I do that? Well for one I was lot better shape.

You're welcome hope they help.

I got one of those little aluminum folding scaffolds for like $30 @ Homodepo a few years back. Beats standing on a milk crate that keeps sliding out from under your feet every time you move. And mine is stock height, well it has 2" leveling spacers but still nothing like 6" lift.

Thanks Joe, it I use a stool that keeps sliding out. I picked up a stand that hooks on my tire for a step it works alright but I need something for the front, I like your idea.

I want to thank everyone for helping me out. I havn't fixed it yet, I have health issues that hinder me for a quick repair, I have to take it slow and easy. Even though I need the darn truck up and running!

I made out a detailed instruction list and tool list for replacing the VP a long while ago. At one point it was in a sticky or a "Tips and Tricks"

Here is the link to another thread with the instructions. Post #9.

Edited to add Having the ***-jack in front slipping out is annoying and dangerous. Take a strap or rope and tie off the stand to the front axle from both legs. Most of the work involved is going to be centered in front of the VP. Once you position the stand, where you need it, put the straps on and it should help from wanting to run out from under you.

well I have everything unbolted and fuel lines off. I am trying to remove the gear. How much force is required to remove it? Im pushing hard and the darn thing won't let go!!

What kind of puller are you using? If you got the one that looks like a disc with bolt holes in it that typically works pretty good. If you got the one that's like a steering wheel puller (what I used) you'll need to get shorter bolts for the two that go into the gear so there's not so much wiggle room as you turn in the center bolt of the puller. A hint, tighten the bolts into the gear as far in as they will go in keeping the puller flat with the gear (with the main bolt on the puller all the way out) then spray the main puller bolt w/WD-40 or like and twist it in till it's almost impossible to turn. Whack the end of the puller bolt with a hammer, turn the bolt in a bit, whack, repeat. Make sure the bolts securing the pump to the case are almost out (at least threaded back in 2 turns) so the pump doesn't "launch" when the gear lets go. Some guys have had to use a little heat. If you need to do this, make sure the puller is very tight (pulling for all its worth) then apply bits of heat to the gear - not too long though, then try to turn the main bolt on the puller - repeat. Hope this helps - getting the gear off is most often the biggest challenge on this job.

Wow! I was actually surprised that the gear on mine just basically popped off after a little pressure with the homemade puller I made thanks to issue#67 and SNOKING. :)

hope u have luck with yours.
