I beat duramax on a test drive...

Dodge crew cab

This photo was taken at the 2001 4 wheeler jamboree in Essex Junction, Vermont. Blue Chevy Diesel does it again second year in a row... .

The red truck is a Unimog. It is a very cool truck, it has a Chevy 350 that was mounted in the bed with a auto trans mated to the unimog trans and I believe it had twin transfer cases. There was a Dodge Cummins there, from Blue Chip, black 3500. He said it had a ton of power but the Unimog got him by 2 feet maybe.

FFutch, I never said Chevys rule but you must have that thought in the back of you head.

chevys do rule

yes I said it... ... ...

they rule in uglyness

they rule in uncomfortableness

and they rule in homeliness!

but thats just my personal opinion..... and I am as biased as you can get :D ... . so sue me! JIM

It looks to me like the competition is at a slight disadvantage. Not only from the probable gearing that the Unimog is set up with, but from the angle of the tow strap.

Doc

I argued about the strap angle because there rules state that the hitch hieght can't be more than 26 in high. But it wasn't a big deal win or lose it is fun to do. I did win though so it was that much better. The Unimog was so geared down that in low low what ever, that motor was spinning around 4500rpm and it was crawling at 5 mph.

What a waste of a good Unimog, putting a Chubby gas engine in it... why not a 4 cyl. Cummins diesel? a 5. 9L 6? or even the original Mercedes diesel. I've got to where I can't even stand the smell of gasoline... .

I can take this one Tom, the reason he put a cheby motor in, is they are the only engines laying around not being used. the cummins and the truck they came in are all still in service.

Hey jdecampo, just curious, but how much concrete was in the bed this year? That extra couple thousand pounds usually helps!!!

By the way, I thought the rules said no extra weight?

:)

RBrooks, If you wanted you could look in the truck while you were there. Last year just my tool box, this year tool box plus cap and my camping gear, duffle bag, cooler and lawn chairs. I also stuffed all the junk Cummins parts I could find in the tool box. Were you at the show?

Yeah, I was there. Sorry I had to bust on ya. At Bloomsburg last year there was a Chevy Dually Crew Cab with BIG concrete blocks in the back under a cap, hence the thought! I am a mud racer myself, so I don't have much time to watch anything else. Our team runs in 5 of the mud classes, but no Diesel's or Dodges for us! We use those for towing.

I will also say that the Unimog weight is more than my truck. There was a Dodge their which from reading the forum, weighs more than my truck as well. I never said my truck has the most power there are a lot of things that helped, good tires and better reaction time. But think what you like and put your truck in next year and see.

Sorry to wind you up, it was ment in fun!

Come over and visit us in the mud area next year. The Dodge is only a tow truck, the race car is Chevy powered.

I will check it out. You guys run some serios HP. Most of the time from where we are watching anyway, it looks like there is not enough water in the dirt to make real mud. I always think it should be waist deep. I have been looking at new trucks and I maybe in a Cummins next year.

For us if the mud is deep it costs lots of money because the cars tend to roll over. We prefer about 6-12". Essex is a little different then most because they have sand and excellent drainage. Makes it really tough to make mud. And yeah, serious HP, approx 2k :)

The cummins is definitly the best motor IMO, too bad the rest of the truck is not up to par. It does seem to be the best compromise at least.
