Hey,

I was under the truck today taking a few other pictures and noticed the oil seeping out around the front of my rear differential. Is this normal, or should I have my dealer look at it on my next visit?

The truck has about 25k and had the rear end serviced at 20k.

Thanks!

It looks like your pinion seal is leaking. Mine did the same at about 7500 miles. Took it in and it was fixed in about an hour. No more problems after that so far!

My was leaking from the same place just a little worse. I have 81,000 miles on my 01. Took into the dealer this week they replaced the seal seems to have fixed the problem.

Glad you're talking about your truck. From the title of the thread I woulda said posting a picture of your rear end here would be a problem in and of itself. :)

I thought there was going to be pic's of broken metal gears and twisted axles everywhere!

Warranty... ... have DC fix it :)

I was thinking the same thing! I just didn't say it :) I too was hoping to see a picture of the rear diff with the cover off. I have no idea what it even looks like in there. With as many problems as I had with it, you think I would know what it looks like. Oh, thats right, my dealer never let me see the truck with the rear cover off. They just assured me it was all perfectly normal! :{

A Rear End For Klenger

Klenger,

Didn't want to let you down. Hopefully this will cure any thought you ever had of owning a ferd.

the above pic looks like a job best left up to at least an F450 if not an F550.

When checking the pinion seal leak issue, always check the vent.

go :p od luck

OMG... Good thing that's not a Chevy. They recalled the cables that support the tail gate because they can break.

The funny thing is that I received the recall letter the day after I traded it in on my RAM. The letter said if you have to load the truck, remove the tailgate first -- then load the truck and put the tailgate back on the truck. And by the way -- we don't have any new cables available at this time.

I'm so glad I have a Dodge now. My '03 Z71 was in the shop about 35 times in the 14 months I owned it. This count is REPAIRS, not service. :|

You mean a wet, oily stain behind the rear-most driveshaft yoke at the front of the rear diff housing is a problem? Not according to my "5-Star" dealer's service dept. I have had the stain similar to the pic above since the truck had a few thousand on it (it has 9k+ now). I've asked the dealer to look at the "leaking pinion seal" at the last two oil changes (i. e. , one @5k mi. and one yesterday @ 9k mi. ). The dealer swears it's the draft tube blowing oil all over everything under the truck. I will admit you can see the splattering under the truck, including on the diff (my driveway has black oil spots on it for the draft tube dripping oil). It is, however, impossible IMHO that the draft tube is splattering behind the yoke and the shield at the pinion seal. Yesterday, the dealer swore they had three techs look at it, but they swear it's dry at the pinion seal, so it "must be' the draft tube spraying everything. At this point, if they're not gonna change the pinion seal, at least I have it documented so I have recourse under the lemon law in case I get screwed later with a shot diff.

Wow, that sucks. I haven't taken mine in yet but will this week. You might want to take your truck the neighboring small-town Dodge dealer and have them replace it for you. Then, take it to the 5-start dealer, show him how nice and clean it is to proove your point and tell them where you're buying your next $40k truck. :) JMHO

I hear ya! This dealer has done nothing but jerk me around: from ordering, to delivery, to broken promises to sub-par service. This truck costs as much or more than a loaded BMW530i, but the total dealer experience has been abysmal. And to think, I was p****d at the service and quality of my old '99 BMW 540i Sport 6-speed (my last new vehicle before this one). Dodge's quality and service makes that car look like the best thing ever built. And I swore to never buy a Bimmer again because of quality issues, LOL! The big three, especially DC, make you really walk thru fire if you insist on buying "American" (yeah, I know where the thing is built,... don't get me started on that, LOL!).
