Here's my best effort at showing the new aFe system installed. They have been uploaded to my Readers Rig Gallery, q. v.

BTW, I noticed significantly lower EGT's @ WOT. I think that even with modest increases in power output, the air intake should be addressed. JMHO

How bad is the turbo whine?

"BAD"?

Last weekend I installed the Torquetube and AFE STG1 PG7...

Turbo Whine? Yeah baby! Oo.

As with most things, a matter of taste I guess ;)

How loud?

Juicedcummins,

For perspective, I am very tolerant of loud engine sounds. One of my cars has set off literally dozens of car alarms. Another has been modified to the extent of sounding as loud as a Nascar racer. I'm not kidding you, and it's been on the track several times. Onlookers stare, or shuffle to see what the h*** was that?

I installed this aFe intake with the turbo silencer ring removed, and also left the cover plate off. So currently, it is as loud as possible. When first hearing it, I was pleased. The dominance of the turbo whistle above the rattle of the motor is more like a semi than a pickup truck - I smiled, I laughed.

Then I drove it for a while and quickly realized that the sound had become intrusive, to the point of disrupting conversation in the cab. Hearing this for prolonged periods over the road would be (for most) intolerable. I want to get the response of a couple more friends (one has a truck like mine, one has the Duramax), then I will quiet things down again - silencer ring and box cover. Hopefully, this will help. But I can't wait to get thier reaction!

A final editorial comment. After reading the Owner's Manual, I was very reluctant to change the air intake. Not for fear of warranty issues, but because I respected DC's/Cummins concern for proper filtering intake particulates. I recommend leaving this component stock if possible. However, I am in the process of modifying beyond what the original intake parts can supply. Hopefully, the aFe parts will be as advertised in terms of filtration and quality.

supersonic,

I purchased the aFe stage 2 system (read intake box and downtube), there is no choice re: the "torque tube". The downtube is molded plastic, which opens at the intake @ six inches, and tapers to join the turbo inlet which is 4 inches. Black plastic may not wow your friends, but is the best material for this application - the heat content of metals (including aluminum) works against your need for cooler (=denser) intake air.

Not sure what you ordered from Geno's, but good luck, they are the best!

That thing looks pretty nice but I just can't fathom how they can justify a $650 retail price on it. That's about twice the normaly outrageous price.

I think I'm going to try and build my own BHAF setup.

Price

The listed retail is ... well, how do I say this?

You should expect to pay a little more than thier previous combination of intake and downtube. This said, the system is not worth what I had to pay for it.

Did you get the new style torque tube or was it the mandrel bent coated unit? I'm still waiting for mine to come from Geno's.

Got the old style... . whew! Personally not diggin' the plastic. Mine breathes like a son of a gun. Not seeing increased temps. Don't see how they could go up considering the volume of air flow.

tdecosta, I am also very famillular with loud engines, equip etc. The noise that my 99 made with a k+n and silencer ring removed drove me nuts. It sounded Ok to everybody else but too high pitched for me. Try driving it @ -45c and it was even worse. My ears would feel like they were bleeding on a long drive. I do have hearing damage from to many miles of the big engines, noisy track machines and lots of gunfire.

My new ride is not breathing right and I want to find a reasonable sounding replacement.

I like my AirAid setup. It has a bigger filter than the AFE from what I can tell and it seems to be filtering excellent. I get sample every oil change and send it to the lab and they say all is well. I alos like how the oval filter sits down inside the stock airbox. It will be easy to go back to stock if needed for any reason. Not trying to start a war but wanted to give juicedcummins some other options.
