I have a few questions for anyone using Piers' modified hx35 turbo on first generation dodge. How does it work with a 16cm housing? Also, how much faster spoolup does it provide? What effect does it have on fuel miliage? Is there a big difference in sound(turbo whine) and exaust temps? Thanks in advance for any info.

PDR HX 35 works great with a 16cm housing. The 16cm bolts right up without any mods. The turbo spools up way faster than the H1C or a stock HX35. How fast depends on your fuel supply. I have run 5 different turbo's on my truck and would recommend the PDR 35/16 for 95% of the 1st genners out there. The whine from the turbo is incredible. At least 3 times more than a stock 35 without the silencer ring. As far as fuel mileage goes, it is minimal gain. Hard to tell for me as I am alittle heavy footed. :D

The egt drop will also depend on your fuel supply but on average you will have faster cool down, cruising temps drop about 75* and wot drop of 150*- 175* is normal but that depends on filter/housing setup etc.

Turbo and injectors are the best money spent on our trucks HANDS DOWN.

Humm..... Mark, looks like I should have had that second cup of coffee :D

rdodd,

I'd like to add that the PDR HX35 will provide much better performance especially if you're running 25+ psi boost. The H1C will start to loose efficiency at around that point and your EGTs will show it. The amount of turbo whine that you'll hear will be affected mostly by your air filter setup. If you have a stock airbox, then whine will be minimal, even with the ring removed. Now, if you have an open air filter with the ring removed..... yeehawwww :D :D

I am running about 23# boost now, so what would i pick up with piers' hx35? Also can you still hear turbo whine even with silencer ring installed? Is it easy to remove and put back in?

I got about a 4psi increase in max boost and about 2psi increase in boost at cruise/light throttle from the new turbo, no other changes. That was with a wastegated 14cm turbine housing. The turbo is a good deal quieter with the silencer ring installed. But still a bit louder than the H1C. The silencer ring can be removed and replaced easily. When putting it back in, just make sure that the snap ring is seated in the groove properly. :D

Thanks for the info fellows. I think this is going to my next addition. Every thing i,ve done to the truck so far has made vast improvements----- pw injectors, low stall torque converter,16 cm housing and i think this will be another improvement that i won't regret.

Hey formula, how do you like that 18. 5 cm housing? I have a HX-35 with an 18. 5 cm housing, and I also have a 12 cm wastegated housing, without the actuator... I'm planning on trying the 18. 5 cm first... how is your spoolup? What all fuel mods have you done?

I have plenty of fuel to spool it up, I'm sure, but I'm wondering how much smoke I'll spew before it winds up... :D

About how much boost could I build without getting too high of egt's if I used the 12 cm wired shut?

Thanks for the help...

No cummins, no dodge- http://www.picturetrail.com/turbokid1

5. 8 liter, direct injected, inline bosch-type pump, replaceable chrome dry liners, solid roller lifters, replaceable valve guides, seats, etc, tuftrided crankshaft, etc, etc...

Currently have t04e10 garrett turbo... max boost is 14 psi and about 1000 degrees... but I have lots more fuel where that came from... Homemade intercooler- takes the place of my grill...

silencer ring!

How do I remove the silencer ring (or how can I tell if I have one)? I put a HX-35 16 in around Christmas. Are there any performance advantages?

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

Got to Holset's web site and download the pdf manual for the HX35. It will show you how to remove the silencer ring and it is a great resource to have. I put a HX35 in my truck a few weeks ago and left the silencer ring out. It does have a good whine to it that way. After I changed my exhaust to a 4" this weekend the whine got louder so I put the silencer back in. You can still hear the turbo at speed but the low boost whine is almost gone.

DT, check this thread for my thoughts on the 18. 5cm housing. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=66258

For more fuel I put in a set of POD injectors and tweaked my injector pump.

With the current boost you're running, I'd say that the 18. 5cm housing would be a dog unless you add more fuel. I'd try your 12cm and keep an eye on EGTs and boost.
