Ok here we go, towing 5000lbs to Phoenix from Riverside Ca going across on 10. There is a major grade, 17 miles. Being board and like listening to the motor and turbo whine I turned off the stereo and started to climb the hill. Overdrive was off and at 7/8 throttle I heard a gas type pinging noise so I floored it and the loud pinging sent away and a very slight pinging noise was apparent. Very Slight.

I use Stanadyne high performance fuel additive all the time.
Totally stock motor, KN filter only.
13000 miles.

So on the way back I went to Circle J and fueled up, thinking the fuel I got was a low grade and put in the additive and the motor still did it.

No water in the collector.
Fuel filter is 6000 miles old.

The outside temperature was 92.

And the water temp guage(still waiting for the real guages)was splitting the zero on the 190, on the steep grades only.

I also hear a metallic noise at a certain rpm, buy only slightly.

Any Ideas???????? or Concerns??????

I've had the noise and after a good tank of fuel or two it disappeared and never came back. I always thought I had a low grade fuel. It was loud in the cab, not just the pinging but the engine overall. Like I said, it went away and has never done it again.

I saw you had the EZ box on the table. That will probably quieten it down some. Stanadyne and a "box" seems to do that for some reason.

I was just going to post something on this subject also. I was running back East at about 16K and I started to here this noise like a ping or mig welding noise. I only run Flying J fuel on the road and I started to get this noise in New Mexico and had all the way to Ohio. So is it bad fuel or do I need to look else where? Does the lift pump give any indications that it is going FUBAR or does it just quit and wipe out the Inj. Pump?
