I spoke with a tech at Cummins today about the pinging noise my motor makes. He said it was normal, a by-product of the injector timing required to get T600 motor 50 state legal. That may be the case but I'm skeptical. Why don't all the motors do it? On my truck it comes and goes. Some people say if they run premium diesel the motors don't ping. Does anyone know what the real story is? You guys running TST's, EZ's, or Six Packs notice any change?

Thanks

Mine does it too. I notice it more when itsn in gear. I believe its normal to the 600.

mine also seems to almost completely go away when shift to neutral or park

The tech at cummins is right, certain variables will cause other trucks to do it more and less but this is a normal thing for these motors.

It's normal for many diesel engines. It's the byproduct of timing changes within the ECM programme. When under load the timing tends to shift retarded and thus the engine clatter is diminished.

While on deceleration the timing shifts to advanced and the clatter (pinging) can be heard (nothing to fret about)

You should here the clatter from the big bores.

I think the clatter you are talking about is different than the pinging I'm talking about. The pinging gets worse when accelerating and goes away on deceleration. It's not the typical diesel clatter. It sounds just like pre-detonation in a gas engine.

Thanks for the support Lou. That's a neat little signature you have. Are we all supposed to care that you have a Road King. Maybe I should add my Murray lawn mower to my signature.

The pinging is do to the angle of the injector spray patteren, it is almost straight down to compensate for the first and last injection timing.

So what we are saying is that not all "600's" do it ? Mine only does it on mild and medium acceleration also. Probally can't here it on heavy accel , but I suspect it is still there !!!!!!

Buzzer and Moel: My '04 305/555 does the same thing. When idleing and in gear, ticking is noticeable. When idleing and in N or P, cannot hear it.

Dan. Poitras: Thanks for the technical input. You obviously know your stuff - just want you to know that we appreciate your expertise and help. Just one of the many benefits belonging to TDR.
