Yesterday while driving down the highway I heard a loud pop. It sounded like I threw a rock from one of my tires and it hit the inner fender. I didn't think anything of it until this morning when I walked into my garage and found a puddle of gear oil under the rear of my truck. There was a small hole in the diff. cover. When I opened it up I found one of the pinion teeth had broke off and then got pitched throgh the cover by the carrier. Has anyone else ever had this happen. The rear end has been maintained regularly and I dont hammer on my truck.

I once worked on an '86 1 ton Chevy 4x4 where this same thing happened. This rear end has a pilot bearing for the inner end of the pinion (nothing like a Dana). This pilot bearing was shot and let the pinion wobble a bit, which led to teeth breaking off. One piece at some point got wedged between the ring gear and diff cover and punched a hole it in.

Holy bat farts Robin:--) :--) :--) .

Are you under warranty? Man, I'm glad that thing didn't fly through a windshield or something like that. I'm trying to imagine the force required to push that thing through the cover. I wouldn't want to be on the business end, if you know what I mean. Good luck with the repair.
