Does anyone know if a Dana 80 has a crush sleeve?

I was told to mark the nut and yoke and torq the nut back to the same position, but the six point nut stops one point short of my mark. Maybe nut was loose before.

Too loose or too tight?

Pinion turns with same resistance as before. Feels normal.

I was told to torq nut to 200 lbs and keep going until I came to my mark. I just used a 3/4 impact wrench to tighten nut .

Maybe I should go back and use the torq wrench method??

No . Atleast not yet . The Dana 80's still use shims to achieve pinion bearing preload . Go ahead and tighten it up . HTH , Thomas

Did the seal on my 94 4 years ago and have 440,000 k . I snugged it by feel with a half inch strongarm. I think it does set your bearing play a little. I don,t think i would overdo it though. My 2 cents:D

pinion seal

this is ironic, I was going to post some questions about pinion seals since mine has started leaking. What size is the nut on the Dana 80? Do you think I can get it off with a 1/2" impact? I have an I-R heavy duty 1/2" with about 450 ft-lbs in reverse. I would imagine I need a puller to get the flange off?

I did my front pinion seal just Saturday had to use the impact to get it off and used it to tighten up... and yes you will need a puller atleast I did its a snug fit... . Rick

If nobody replies with an answer on the pinion nut size I will try and get some time to go out into the garage tonight and find this info out . All I remember is that I had to break out my 3/4 drive sockets to find a impact socket big enough .

Thomas

No crush sleeves on the Dana 80. The torque is 450 ft-lbs and you do need a puller to remove the flange.

I marked mine on removal and reinstalled it with a large impact (a friend of mine owns a 5 bay repair business) and let it hammer for a while to get it tightened back up to where it was. I actually went a tick past where it was to make sure the torque was where it neede to be. That was 1 1/2 years ago.
