Pinion seal leaking second time.Whats up???

My rear pinion seal started leaking about 2 thousand miles ago. take it to the dealer and they change the seal. ( Very good service and attitude at Larry Miller, Peoria, Az)





Well, its leaking again. I call and tell the same service tech its leaking again. He sounded surprised.



I have the 4:10 gears and 6 speed.



I told him that i figure the bearing is going, allowing the pinion shaft play to wear the seal. ( At least thats what happened in the old days when I toyed with cars etc)



Has anybody had similar problems? I know of the launch shudder. Mine had it new, but went away a few thousand miles later...



Have not had the dredded drive train vibration, or nothing close to what others describe.





Any help or suggestions would be great. I have a appt. this friday for another seal. . but something tells me its gonna leak again.



I searched pinion seal leaks etc and came up with a bunch of unrelated stuff.

I'm on my 3rd pinion seal and second yoke. After the yoke and new seal were installed, the leak stopped for 2 months and came back so I just said the heck with it and here I am 30k miles later with the same leak. I just check the oil level regularly, but haven't had to add any makeup. The leak just looks bad from it blowing everywhere even though nothing drips on the ground. There's also no unusual metal wear inside the differential so I'm not worried - just somewhat ticked that a $31k truck leaks! Sorry, if this wasn't the answer you were looking for!

I would put 75W140 in it and stop worrying if the warranty was out. But for now, off to the dealer again. .



25000 miles and this is what happens!!! Too bad they dont use the DANA 80 still. My old 80 started leaking at 100,000. New yoke and seal, never leaked again. . Those were the days.

Our towncar did that, problem was the axle housing vent was pluged and when it heated up, it developed pressure. I had taken out the fill plug when the axle assmbly was warm and air whooshed out at me. Good luck on a fix.

TK is right on the money. Make it a regular PM item when changing you oil or any other regularly scheduled maint.

I use compressed air to clear the vent lines at each oil change on both the 99 aswell as the 05. Remove the factory installed clamp on the axel and replace it with a standard hose clamp this will make it easier each time it needs to be done.



The transfer case also has a vent line that should be cleared regularly. The NV 56 Honey has the same check valve looking thing only without the tube . I'm still trying to figure out how I will get at it.

My vents are all clear. When it gets cold out my leak stops, but come springtime it restarts. It's my version of the Farmer's Almanac!



Heck, my '45 jeep with Dana axles and new seals still leaks everywhere (along with transmission and transfercase!). If it wasn't leaking, then I would be worried. I do like the Dana axles on the jeep as you liked the D80 for your truck. They were fairly easy to take apart, refurbish, and then set up. Before I bought an in-lb torque wrench I just used a cheap fish scale and wrench to set pinion bearing preload!
