bought a set of pistons/connecting rods on ebay ...

86$ :D

they are out a '99 ...

can i keep them for back ups for my '01

what about so vs ho ?

or do i just save them to tease my chevy and ford buddies

There is what is called a Grading process for pistions on these trucks. I have an H. O. and I know that pistions from a non H. O. will not work in my truck without doing other things. Has something to do with the clearance between the piston top and the head. I know that you cannot mix grades either. I think this how Cummins can build a basic engine that can then be used in a Marine application or Industrial or Transportation and even though the engines look the same, they are very different when it come to hp and tq outputs.

I don't have enough knowledge to inform you better, but there are those that do that should chime in here.

I would be very carefull and make sure you have all your research done before you install them. ;)

i got a set of pistons /rods too off ebay 98. 5 , i was looking at them today and comparing them to a 01 engine i have and noticed that the dish is deeper in the 98. 5 , i dunno if the 01 is a HO i just bought it to replace the one i melted in mine ,,butt i'll look at mine tomorrow and compare . I know one thing these engine are tough my original engine had 247,000 miles on it and melted the pistons ,and with a mild hone job to c if the walls cleaned up i mesured ring gap and it was 17 ,factory minn is 16

i checked the 98. 5 to my pistons in my NON HO 01 and theres a slight difference in the bowl the 98. 5 is slighty deeper , really need to CC the bowls to b sure

anyways im putting these in my 01

The CPL will only tell you that the pistons are different part numbers.

The HO had different pistons making a higher compression ratio.

Lowering the compression wont hurt anything.
