i am building a common rail and was wondering if i should run new stock pistons or have them ceramic coated, expected engine output should be around 700 - 750 on diesel pros and cons welcome... .

What will be your theoretical gain if you have them coated? Will they help produce more power? What are the advantages if any?

I would definitely recommend coating, every NASCAR, and Pro Stock engine builder coats pistons. The advantage is that it keeps the heat in the combustion chamber making power, and not melting pistons. I would also recommend coating you bearings, this will give you an added insurance policy if you lose oil pressure, of lean on it a little to hard, but make sure you check you clearance. In a Cummins the clearances are on the extreme tight side stock, and rob a considerable about of power. I strongly recommend Polly Dyne, their site in in my signature. They have Cummins bearings in stock.

I think it is cheap insurance, personally. I have had things coated from PolyDyn(tops of pistons, piston skirts, bearings, etc) and I think it is very worth it; cheap horsepower. Like the others said, it keeps the heat inside the combustion chamber, rather than outside it. You can worry a little less about your EGT's, since you have the pistons coated. You could also get the top of your head(inside the combustion chamber) or the valves done too, while you have it all apart.

I had PolyDyn coat my exhaust manifold, turbo housing and downpipe, and I plan to do a lot more with them when I go nuts with my truck.

hope this helps

I did HPC hi-temp coating on top & and there Moly coating on the skirts. (pics in my photos of engine overhaul) If I had it to do over again I wouldn't do the tops of the pistons. My truck is a daily driver it doesn't get warm enough in the winter. I know it make more HP and helps in milage, but I freeze my butt off in the winter...
