52,000 miles 2013. I started to feel a very light pulsing/shudder when braking a few months ago, Looks like the caliper was not working and now has started working again. I only felt something occasionally and was waiting for halfway decent weather to investigate. So today I found this on the right rear rotor inside, the outer side looks OK (maybe some signs of excessive heat). I do tow a boat, but mostly run empty, and except for a occasional panic stop I like to think I'm fairly light on the brakes.

They are replacing the Calipers, Rotors and pads. How common are stuck Calipers on the 4th gens? Did not have any brake problems on the 2003 Dually.

I've had this same issue show up on a bunch of Dodge and Ram trucks since 2004. I've wondered if Chrysler has a casting problem. The rotor looks like chunks of metal have peeled away. The strange thing is I've never seen it happen with aftermarket rotors regardless of which brand I've used over the years.

Both pads had worn down to just a 2 or 3 mm on that wheel, So some or all of this was excessive heat build up. I'm going to have to start doing a more in depth brake inspection every year, and I'm hoping for a little better fuel mileage now that the brake is working correctly.

Your obviously in the salt belt. I would guess the calipers rust while stationary, just like the heavy rust between the cooling fins. My cars rust the rotors after every wash, especially if you don't drive them after washing.

Common issue if you haven’t performed routine caliper service. Had the same problem with my 2011.
No issues since with mine since I’ve done routine yearly service.
All shops up here offer the service @ $40 per axle.
How often did you have the calipers serviced?
With the current caliper designs, service (slide surfaces cleaned and pins lubed) should be done at minimum once a year, especially if motoring in the salt belt.
Just my experience.

Thank you TSkoropad.

I have never had these calipers serviced, or any previous vehicles that were not part of a brake pad or rotor replacement at what seemed to be normal wear intervals. Did not realize that it was a recomended thing, I sure missed the other posts on them. Did I miss articles in the magazine as well?

I will now be servicing the calipers myself on all of our vehicles (4) once a year, we are retired so are able to now limit the salt exposure somewhat.

Happy to help.

Not sure if this was ever discussed on this forum.

Regular caliper service is pretty much a requirement with all newer vehicles now, regardless of manufacturer.

On a good note, since I’ve been servicing mine on an annual basis, I’ve had no more issues.
And I live in NW Ontario, and run in a 6 month of the year road salt environment.
