Planning a trip to Calif. and do not want to be stopped for smoke. I have a Smarty and can run #0 at half power and NO SMOKE. Is it harmful to
run program 0 for 1200 miles? I normally run #9 but that can get very smoky if I forget to wait for full boost before hammering the throttle.
any ideas out there?

Thanks,
Mick

I haven’t seen a road side check for quite some time. They may have used up their money for the year. I doubt they would pull you in anyway with out of state plates.I would consider using a less aggressive tune.Smoke tickets may be a possibility.

If the CARB people try stop you remind them they have no authority to do so. They are not law enforcement personal.
Ask them where they get the authority to write tickets. They are required to be federally commissioned law enforcement officers to write tickets, and CARB is not.

the checks are voluntary as well.

My experience in the last 10 years of living in both SoCAl & NorCaL with out of state tags (AD Military) has been with no problems.....I of course, am conscience of what my tailpipe signature is when accelerating hard and when towing. I cannot speak to as what your perception of a little or a lot of "un-burnt fuel" is, but feel that unless you are trying to smoke out intersections (or Prius'es) you will be fine. Just keep an eye on your tailpipe signature, and don't drive it like a teenager on youtube.....

Running "0" is basically running stock, correct? Why would you think that would be harmful?

Just my $0.02, but I personally have no desire to go there.

Every road side check point i have seen has had a CHP officer and some have even had canines

What your saying is very true, but THEY DO have the authority to detain you until the CHP shows up, Just like Commercial Scales the inspectors are NOT able to write tickets but when the Officer THAT CAN shows up and hears how defiant someone has been I CAN BET THE COST OF THE TICKET + A TOW BILL JUST WENT UP!!!

Like Bob & others have said seeing out of state plates is more than likely a FREE PASS
Its been awhile THANK GOD since I've lived in the XXXX XXXX but if you are just a tourist they'er pretty cool if your an A H they wrote the book on the lifestyle.

I've only seen the sniffer vans at on-ramps, unaccompanied by any LEO and just lift off the throttle going by. K-forn does have laws about excessive smoke, flame, etc. but even the CARB people don't encourage turning anyone in unless it lasts more than 10 seconds...by then I'm well on boost and hazy at best.

Just like dui check points they are set up where there is no turn off to avoid an exit...it’s amazing how quiet and smoke free my 94 could be while cruising by a check point

Thanks for all the responses, Made it halfway on #0 and went to #7 for the remainder. I CAN drive with no or little smoke and will watch for the CARB
monitors while I'm here.

They usually have CHP with them but I understand it's voluntary.

I don't think you need to be too concerned about being pulled into a checkpoint with out of state plates. As Bob4x4 mentioned the funds may be gone and I haven't seen a checkpoint in several months here in SoCal. I will say tho' they seem to frequent certain areas and if you happen to see a sign that says, " Survey crew ahead," that could be an actual survey crew or the BAR doing spot checks. I wouldn't worry about it.

AnonEd, Thanks for the laugh (your sig) I’m not a complete idiot ... a few bits remain missing.:D

As for a chuckle, here’s a favorite of mine from an old bumper sticker. “I don’t suffer from INSANITY - I enjoy every moment of it.”
