Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Plate numbers

I know that plates have been done to death on here as far as what plate is good for a given application. My question is... Is there any rhyme or reason to the numbering system? Do the numbers have any meaning to the plate, or are they just to tell them apart? i. e. -one number comes on strong at the bottom end, another at the top.

Just to tell them apart. However, the lower the # of the plate, the more rack travel is allowed & therefore more fuel.
