my truck now has about 103,000 miles on it. It has a bit more play in the steering wheel than i would like. It is not that big of a deal but it gets kinda annoying on uneven roads or changing lanes on a crowned road. At my old job we had a '95 3500 that kinda felt about the same with steering wheel play although not as bad. Is this just charactiristic of dodge's??? A mechanic friend recommended maybe tighting up the steering box. any ideas?????

Just curious, but how much is a new Borgeson steering shaft? Mine is ok right now, but I am sure it will choke sooner or later.

thanks for the help guys. Is this the square block looking thing that is about 2iches long that connects the steering shaft directly to the steering box. I felt it and moved the shaft and did notice some play i think this is where the problem is.

cummins cowboy, yes that is it. With the borgerson shaft comes a proper universal joint that is covered by a rubber boot. I replaced mine a number of years ago because the steering box was leaking. This is a much better setup.

cummins cowboy, I agree with the others, the Borgeson steering shaft is the way to go, if you got the dough. Problem for me was that I did'nt, so I went to Dodge and purchased a coupler rebuild kit for $11. 00. Now it is as good as new. I can get the part no. s if you need a inexpensive fix.

When you crank the wheel back and forth, look for vertical play on the steering arm at the steering box. It can be adjusted out at the top of the box. Also check tie rod ends and idler. I had to replace my idler as soon as I got the truck. I have yet to have a bad coupler on any truck or car I've had, but time will tell! Of course I DID use two Borgeson joints on my old MG to clear the exhaust manifold on the 375 hp Vette I installed in it. They worked pretty well.

CrewCabDiesel: Did you get your Borgeson Shaft from Borgeson or some other dealer? WHO? Thanks

I called Borgeson direct and they shipped that day. I was in a hurry to get mine, I had just installed my rebuilt Cummins/Trans/Transfer Case and did the rest of the 1991 conversion. Turns out in 1991 Dodge changed the length of the steering column and my old 1985 steering shaft was too long. Try setting still for two days waiting for a part, and all you can do is set there and listen to the Cummins purr, just dying to drive it #ad
. But over all, the new steering Borgeson shaft is great and if I had know the difference it made, I would have done it much sooner.

Steering drag link? Did somebody mention that? I know I had to replace that.

I did like Plowboy and got the parts to rebuild my coupler. I got the part no. from him and it cost all of $5. 75 at local DC dealer. It's really simple and you could rebuild it many times for what a replacement will cost. Just my thoughts.

Could someone post the DC part numbers?? Although my parts guys are *usually* pretty bright... I'll have to check it out.

By the way speaking of loose steering, on a 175k mile truck (1990 D250) which front end parts are most likely causing body roll, steering play, and excessive steering wheel vibration, especially over pavement that isn't PERFECTLY smooth? I'm thinking tie-rods or wheel bearings may be shot with that many miles. . just bought the truck last Dec and it's gotten worse...

Ordered the rebuild kit and when ordering, use number 4443436, as the dealer didn't recognize it with the "0" in front of it.

Oh, list price was $9. 25 and a net of $6. 94.

Hope this helps somebody.
